Brandon Takes Miner, Family '

NEW GLASGOW (CW—Mayor James Creighton of Brandon, Mian., said here Monday his city has adopted a family from‘the disaster-torn mining town of Springhill, NS.

The Family, Ken Smith. 32. his wife and their 12-year»old child, will move to Brandon soon as “‘we find them a house and a job,” the mayor said.

Smith was one of the survivors of the Oct. 23 mine cave-in that took 74 lives. Mr. Creighton spent the weekend here after visiting Springhill to talk with the family.

The Smiths will be the second Springhill family adopted by a Canadian city. Calgary announced last week it would provide a home and job for mine'r' Tom McManaman.

PIC’I‘OU, N. S., — (CP) — A 27-year-old navy petty oﬁficer, Stewart Kendall Baker, of Dart- mouth, N.S., was committed to Supreme Court followng prelim- inary hearing here Monday on a criminal negligence charge in the shooting death of a hunting com- pardon.

Canadian Press Staff Writer MONTREAL (GP) —— Tolls for ships and c argo e s movmg through the St.«LaJwrence Seaway within five months are expects to be formally confirmed next month by Canada and the Umted States. 1 _ . The toll schedules, it is under- stood, are to be incorporated In an agreement between the two countries, not a formal treaty which would require U.S. congres- sional approval and could open the toll issue to political pres- sures from anti-seaway groups 11! the U.S.

The big question is whether Canada will resist the loud out- cry against charging tolls for transit of the Welland Canal be- tween Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, an all-Canadian route built morethan25yearisalgoandoper- ated free for all since then.

Many Canadian shippers have fought tolls for the Welland, which is legally part of the new seaway according to Canadas seaway legislation.

SEAWAY COST $475,000,000 .

Both the Canadian and Amen- can 5 e a w a y authorities are changed by law to levy tolls to pay otlf the $475,000,000 Seaway cost in 50 years. A proposed toll schedule, announced last June, set up a composite system that is expected to be left substantially the same in the proposed U.S.- Canada agreement.

It called for four cents a ton on the ship’s gross registered ton- nage, 40 cents a ton ton bulk cargo and 90 cents a ton for gen- eral cargo for ships using the new seaway’s seven locks and four canals between Montreal and Lake Ontario.

For using the Welland Canal, the toll amounted to two cents a ton on the ship’s GIRT, two cents for bulk cargo and five cents tor general cargo.

This produces a total toll tor ocean to lakehead ships of six cents on the ship’s tonnage, 42
