The case of Zion Church picnic was sub mitted to a large jury yesterday at Morell, and the unanimous verdict was that the managers had again gained theirpoint. A large number of scholar?, with parents and visitors, took the train at Charlette- town, and after a pleasant run, reached the grounds. The occupants knew they were in safe hands when they found that Conductor Tanton and Driver Craswell were atthe helm, and a most enjoyable day wass pent on the banks of the Morell River. The sports committee, Messrs. Ross and Kennedy are to be congratulated on the splended programme, so weil ar- ranged, contested - and carried out’ In this connection the managers wish to thank Messrs. Haszard & Moore, J. T. McKenzie, T. B. Alchoro, D. A. Bruce, Alex. Bruce, John McLeod & Co. and James Paton & Co. for valuable prizes | given. The also desire to return

Another success was the First Methudist Church picnic at Red Point, or the beautiful grounds of John Maceachern, | Esq. Prizes were awarded | successful competitors in the vari- ous games. About five hundred chil- dren and alarge number of adults sat down to dinner. The 82nd Battalion Band was present with a choice programme.

The League of the Cross picnic at West River was also a decided success—the best in the history of the League. There was a large attendance, and the sail up and down the river was thoroughly enjoyed. The usual games and amusements were provided on the grounds, and entered into with spirit. The League band played well and contributed much towards the day’s enjoyment. The members of the League and the Reverend Director are sincerely grateful to all, but most particularly to the ladies in charge and those assisting, and to the generous contributors.

Sir,—In your paper of yesterday an anonymous correspondent, over the name of “Taxpayer,” states that “in all cases bills rendered to the taxpavers do not cor- respond with the assessor? books.” “I'ax§ payer” then proceeds to insinuate that there 8 something wrong aud fora De. This statement is capable of being read as if all the notices did not agree with the assessu.ents, and in order to prevent that false impression going about { desire to say that at the hearing of the assessment appeals, but notice was found to be _ different from the assessment, and considering the fact that 2500 notices were sent out, it would not be very surprising if an occa- sional error made. Mrs. Ann (Cameron), the beloved w fe of Daniel McGregor, Esq , died at their home, Union Road, Lot 51, King’s Co., June 24, 1895, aged 66 years. Her bus- band, with five sons, three daughters and many friends sadly mourn the loss which they sustain in thedeath of Mrs. M., who was beloved by all to whom she was well known. For many years the departed sister was a member of the Church of Christ at Montague, and in that relation, as well as in every department of life’s

Chambers, of Centraila, has received an infernal machine. Her father says the box containing the machine was addressed to her by a Christian church minister who was jilted by Mrs. Chambers about a year ago and was last heard from at Raleigh, N. C. The postmaster was suspicious and opened the package.

Monrreat.—July 10—A Star cable says there were heavy declines in Anglo—Can- adian trade in June. The exports to Can- ada decreased 19 per cent in that month and 8 per cent in the six months up to July 1. The six months imports from Canada decreased 26 per cent in June and there wasa12 per cent declide in wheat in the six months named. This balanced the increase in flour. Cheese declined £80,000; fish £50,000; and wool £210,000.

Sr. Sreruex, N. B., July 10.—W. F Todd’s famous stallion Lumps died this morning from rupture sustained. Mr. Todd bought the stallion eight years ago for $17,000.

Loxponperry, July 8.—The Irish Na- tional Convention met in Omagh, county Tyrone, twenty-two miles from here yes- terday, and was the scene of constant dis- turbances. Owing to the disputes be- tween Timothy Healey, John Dillon and Dr. Kenny, no chairman could be appoint ed, and the organization of the convention could not be effected. A strong force of police was stationed outside the building in readiness to quell any violent disorder.

Becnarest, Roumania, July 9.—A cloud burst on Saturday night destroyed half of the village of Olanesoi, in the dis— trict of Valcea. Many persons perished and ten bodies have been recovered.

Paris, July 10.—The Journal’s corres- pondent at St. Petersburg announces the discovery near Mo-ocw of an extensive conspiracy against the life of the Czar. The chief of the secret police, after tracing the conspiracy for over a month, has suc~ ceeded in arresting eight of the conspira- tors, who include six recently pardoned Nihilists. The Czar has rewarded the chief of police with a present of ten thou- sand roubles.

Limenick, July 9.—A wholesale poison ing case has occurred among the Laurel Hill nuns, sixty-four of whom partook of

poisoned custard. Two have died, and the others who ate of the poisoned dish are dangerously ill.

Winyivec, July 9.—His Grace Arch-

bishop Langevin and Rev. Father Gail- lette, rector of St. Mary’s church, leave for Quebec next Thursday on an important mission. Their object is to raise ftinds for the support and maintenance of the Roman Catholic separate schools in Win- nipeg and the province, and they propose to accomplish this object by means of an allottment or prize drawing scheme. The details of the plan have not yet been ar- ranged, but it is understood to be the in- tention to have the drawing take place in the province of Quebec, tickets for the same being on sale in all the chief cities ofthe Dominion. The principal prizes will be choice lots in Winnipeg, and also farms located in the province of Manitoba. The promoters say that it is absolutely
