Gels 12 Years For Bonk Holdup ‘

BROCKVILLE. Ont. ICcPi— Rene Martin. 23. of Montreal was sentenced Friday to 12 years for his part in a Brockville bank rob- bery last May in which the loot amounted to at least $3,350,000.

Martine’s l a w y e r, Raymond Daoust of Montreal, said he will appeal the sentence on the grounds of severity. The max- imum is 14 years. Martin already has served seven months in the county jail here. I

The court received a surprise shortly before sentencing when

‘ Bet-Sgt. Leslie Sterritt said he receive a parcel in the mail Nov. 26 containing $51000 in bonds— part of the Brockville Trust and Savings Company theft. ,

He said the package was ad'- dressed to him from an unknown person and was delivered to him at the B-roclcvill-e police station, where it was opened.

It contained $20,000 worth of bearer bonds and $31,000 in reg- istered securities. '

A company official said $2,250,~ 000 in bearer bonds, which nor- mally can be cashed by the bearer. was stolen. Pol-ice re- covered $500,000 of them when Martin was arrested in Montreal May 4. Registered bonds valued at $1.100,000 were stolen and $600,000 worth recovered. Also stolen were cash and jewelry.

Friends of Mrs. Ros-s Howard, O’Leary, are sonny to hear that her mother Mrs. J. S. Boutilier, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia was tak- en suddenly ill while visiting her daughter and sown—law, Rev. and Mrs. Howard and it was found necessary to have her ad'- mitted in the O’Leary Commun- ity Hospital for treatment. Her condition progressing favourably.

A very successful auction sale was held on Wednesday after - noon, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward MacAnslland and sponsored by the Bloomfield Ladies Aid. A substantial sum was realized. Lunch was served by the ladies. '
