A Back Dowy.—A correspondant writes: “On Wednesday the 20th ult., a large crowd, amorg whom were some prominent horsemen from the city, gathered at Clyde River to wit- hess the race between Frank Leonard's mare and Fred Kitson’s mare for $20 a side It appears that Mr. Kitson promised to start his mare in a club trot with Mr. Leonard's mare and John Scott's horse Masonic Pilot which came off on the 23rd March. He faiied to do so, but issued a challenge to trot any- thing in Ciyde River for $20. Mr. Leonard took him up and offered to put up the money, but Kitson would not. He said he would put i up on the day of the race, but after gather- ing the people there and keeping them walt- ing votil nearly five o'clock he comple ely backed down. Thus Mr. Leonard stops tne gat that was likely to affect the Clyde River ae to the disappointment of the specta-

Mr. Tupper’s resolution to impose a fee of $10 for each inspection of large boats, scow or undecked vessel, passed through committee, and a bill founded thereon was read for the first time and referred toa committee. The House went into committee of supply on an item of $61,280 for saiaries,and contingents for Senate. Mr. Mulock moved that the amount be reduced by $1,600, paid for news- papers tor the Senare Reading Room. He said one reading room was sufficient for both bodies ;The speaker said that oe ading room wa pot large enough for both Houses The sinendment was lost. A discussion foilowed on sessional and extra cle: ks for the Commons, Dr. Borden accused a messenger named Moore for taking part against him ir bis election. Mr Mulls, of Annapolis replied that the member fr King’s bad nothing tu say of those Government officials who took part in his own behalf in King’s. [n that con- test there was one postmaster in particular who exercised himself in every possible way outside anp inside his office to secure Borden's election. It turns out that Moore was not employed in the House this session’

Canada at the World's Fair. Orrawa, April 1. lt is understood that Parliament will be asked to vote $150,000 to defray expenses of the Canadian exhibit at the World’s Fair at Chicago. The supplementary estimates were presented. The total amount to be voted 1 $807,000. The twenty-eight re- porters to the fisheries intelligence bureau will receive $15 each.

Mr. Goldwin Smith has been writing on Australian politics, and points to Canada as an awful warning against inconsiderate feder- ation. Thisshould encourage the Australians in their nationalizing work. Mr. Smith's chief objection to the Canadian federation is that ic will not break up or eel) itself into commercial bondage at the bidding of a coterie of pessimistic soreheads of which he iz a chief.
