Apvicrs from St. ‘John’s, Nfld., report seal fishery very good, but little profit will be made, owing to the low prices of oil and skin. Fisheries are reported good all around the coast. Tue Entertainment given under the auspices of St. Patrick’s Band, in St. Patrick’s Hall last evening, was a first-class affair. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and a moderately good audience was present. The programme opened with ‘* Beautiful Bells” by the Band, after which the *‘ Banner Chorus’ was well rendered by Mr. Williams and the ladies and gentlemen of St. Dunstan’s Choir; then Mr. Kelly sang ‘‘ Speak to me, Speak,” and was followed by Miss Newbery, who sang **Kileen Allanna” with exquisite taste. Mr. J. McEachern’s recitation was well received, and the character songs of Mr. Williams—‘‘ McCarthy's Mare” and ‘The Hat my fatherjwore,”’ brought down the house. Mrs. Gaffney’s rendition of ‘‘Far o’er the Deep” was good, as was the ‘‘Gambier’s Wife,” by Mr. Hermans. ‘The second part of the programme was opened with a Choris— *‘Sunrise’”—nicely snng. It was followed by Mr. Wambold, who sang , Without ac- companiment. ‘Scotland Yet,” by Mr. Caven, called forth an encore, as did ‘Hear me, Norma,” by Mrs. Blake, and the ‘‘Old Sexton” by Mr. Kelly. The song and chorus ‘‘Moily Brown,” by Mr. C€. Hermans was well ren- dered and favorably received. Mr. Williams next followed with “Mary of Argyll,” which was rendered in excellent voice and fine style. An “Irish Medley,” by the Band, closed the Concert part of the programme. The farce “No. One, Round the Corner,” was then pro- duced, Messrs. Coyle and Crowley takirg the

Prince Edward Island Elections.

Despatches have just been received here which show the total defeat of the lecal Grit party of Prince Edward Island. The telegrams so far indicate that the result is nineteen Liberal-Conservatives to three Op- positionists, and the calculation is that twenty-four to six will be the result of the elections. It must be remembered that al- though this is a local election the tariff has been made the widest possible use of througheut the canvas. The Minister of Marine made the announcement, and Mr. Mackenzie tried to convince the House that Mr. Pope was wrong in making such an announcement. But Mr. Pope contended with justice he was in order, inasmuch as previous speakers had referred to the effect of the tariff in Prince Edward Island. Mr. Pope said the people of the Island had en- dorsed the policy of the present Govern- ment. <A sharp discussion followed. Mr

THE local elections in Prince Edward Island took place yesterday. The result, which will be found in another column, is about the mest complete and convincing answer that even the Toronto Giobe could wish for, to its recent statements concerning the secession movement in that Province. The crushing defeat of the Grit party in the Island Province is the more significant from the fact that the elections having taken place since the declaration in the Dominion House of the National Policy.-- Montreal Gazette.

The policy of France towards Egypt is not to precipitate matters. The present tendency is to the other extreme. Gambetta’s views in regard to Egypt are more decided than those of Waddington, but he does not wish to ex- excise pressure on the Governinent.
