Lord Salisbury Explains.

Loxpox, Nov. 16.— Lord Sali-bury writesto the morning newspaper stating that Lord Fitzmaurice has inadvertently attributed to him language which he 4id not use. The passage on which Lord Fitz- maurice based bis declaration concludes, referring to Lord Fitzmaurice’s hope as to ‘be eventualities : “I do not which to dis- cuss arrangements which, in circum- stances that are yet in the future, the government may think desirable, but only io entera protest against anyone assum-~ ing that the quotation of Lord Fitz- maurice is reported to have made was 4 correct representation of my speech.”

Unusual aciivity has taken possessinn of the army’s well-known energetic members in anticipation of this great ‘event. The army’s benefizent Opéraiious ate maintained purely, by the free will of the people. The neeis of ite vasi missionary labors among the heathen abroad aud the downfsllen at home are chiefly met through the agency of Self Denial. Officers and soldiers of all ranks deny themselves in order to help forward the work ot the army. In this outside friends and sympathizers of the work are invited to j>in in gift or sacrifice.

Brave Men.—The Summerside Farmer says: An act of bravery occured at Eg- mont Bay last Monday morning which de~ serves public recogniton. In the terrible storm of Sunday night the schocn>r Ex-~ presa, Jaden with shingles from Gaspe to Charlottetowo, was driver before the wind her boat washed away and the vessel dash-~ ed ashore at Cape Egmont, close by a big rock called the * Dutchman,’ at about two o’clock on Monday morning. Despite the 4 terrible sea that was rurn‘ng at the time, Mezers. Joseyh Barriot and Maxime Arsenault, of Cape Egmont, put outyto the rescue inadory. After the greatest diffi- culty the brave fellows succeeded in reach- iug the wrecked vessel about 11 o’clock and rescuing Captain Stewart and the crew uf foar men. But for the action of the gentlemen named at tle r own im- minent peril, the captain and crew of the Exprees would undoubtedly hav? perisbed.

An in-~ fluential supporter or two of Sir Louis Davies’ will easily obtain a suspension of any regulation that“‘doeem’t suit.”

—The Government of this Province is not alone in its carlessness about “the mest helpless of God’s creatures.” A dispatch reports that “the Augusta insane asylum, 4 charitable institution supported by the State of Maine, is almost entirely out of fuel and its inmates are in danger of freezing unless & fresh supply can be bed soon.” Scarcity of coal is the excuse in this case.
