Mr. I. C, Hait, of this city, shipped by steamer Worcester to Boston, yesterday, one hundred and fifteen barrels of mackerel. This is the first shipment of mackerel from this port the present season. Mackerel are at present worth $8 per barrel.

Mrs. Wm. Hearotp, of Dalhousie Settle- meut, Annapolis County, N. S. has a hen four yeacs old that, up to a year ago, was perfectly black, and laid constantly, when a change gradually to take place. The color changed to white; she has stopped laying and taken to crowing instead. She has raised a comb, and set herself up as a phenomena generally.

A weavy storia passed over this Province last night. It was accompanied by vivid flashes of lightning, thunder, rain and hail. On St. Peter’s Road the lightning struck and demolished a tree tininlle the residence of Mr. Andrew Duncan. The occupants of the house were much affected by the shock.—At Brackley Point Road another tree was struck by the electric flaid. The ground, for several chains, was shaken, and men who saw the occurrence were terrified by subsequent awfully vivid flashes.—At Covehead very heavy showers of hail fell, doing considerable damage to the crops. ——The rain in the western section of the Province is reported to have been very heavy, though no damage to the crops is so far reported.

Trouble in Newfoundland.

Advices by the 8. S. Alhambra, report a strike of miners at the Little Bay mine and a suspension of shipment of ore. The own- ers had given notice of a reduction of wages on the Ist inst., to which the men would not submit. The result would be disastrous to both masters and men. The North Star says :—‘‘ it has for some time past been a matter of a grave question how, in view of the competition in copper production, the low rate at which the ore is sold and the decreasing percentage in value of property, that the business is still carried on. Already operations at Bett’s Cove have been very much curtailed, not more than 400 men be- ing employed there now agairfst 11,000 last fall, The yield of ore for 1878, is only 25,- 000 tons against 44,000 tons in 1877.’ '
