The Legislature of New Brunswick was opened on Saturday the ifth May instant.

They know that as eitisens of an independent State they are now to die; and the great question with them io—which mode of death will be the most agreeable? 'r None pleases them." They are as hard to satisfy in this respect as the old author whose words are quoted. But the form of destruc~ tiou which Is dreaded more than any other is un- doubtedly annexation to Prussia; and entry into the North Gannon League is looked it n as equiv- alent to this. Annexation to France is considered a far less terrible cod, and there are numbers of col thusisotic persons here who actually desire it. These belong to what Is called the “ Liberal party." for even in Lnnonshurg. where the most perfect freedom exists, and where the taxes are almost nomina- ted there aro. probably for the sake of fashion. both Liberrll and Conservatives. Annexation to Belgium \VOIIII. please everyone except Frcuohllold Liberals and a very small Prussian party who are bound to Prussia h commercial and other line. and who maintain t at the material interests of all Luxem- burg demand the closest possible connexion with Germany. I believe they are right. but I am quite certain that this view is a very unpopular one. and that whether the syn athy with France be great or not. the antipathy to russia. in Luxemburg. is very strong. The I’russinns and the Prussian ollloial system aredisliked. whilotho Prussian military con- scription is feared. But the notion of being annexed to Ilelginm is looked upon as impracticable. It would not solve the difficulty finally. The Luxem- lnirg fortress in the hands of such a weak Power on Belgium would be a constant temptation both to France and Prussia. As for neutrality under a European guarantee that would only be respected until a‘pl‘ot’ext for war arose.
