Thrashing a Prince

One day a young recruit was standing guard before the doorof the entraace to Peter the Great’s private chambers io the palace of St. Petersberg. He had received orders to admt no one. Ashe was passing slowly up and down béfore, the door. Prince Mentchikoff, the tavor- ite minister of the Czar, approaehed,at- tempting to enter. He was stopped by the recruit. The prince, who had the fullest liberty of calling on his master) at any time, sought to push the guard | and pass him,but the young man weuld notamove, but ordered his highness te | step back.

“You foo!,” shouted the prince, don't you know me?’

The recruit smiled and said,—

“Very well, your highness ; orders are peremptory te let nobody pass.”

The priace,exasperated at the fellow’s impudence, struck him a blow in the face with his riding whip.

“Strike away, your highness,” said the soldier, ‘‘but I cannot let yeu in. ’

Peter in the room hearing the noise outside, opened the door and inquired what it meant, aod the prince told him. The Czar was amused, but said nothing at the time. Inthe evening, however, he sent for the prince and the soldier. As they came in together, Peter gaye his own cane to the soldier, saying,—

“That mao struck you in the mern- ing ; Dow, you must return the blow to that fellow with my stick.”

The prince was amazed.

“Your majesty,” be said, this eom-| mon svldier to strike me?’ j

‘I make him a captain, said Peter. |

“But I'm an officer of yeur Majesty's | househeld,”’ objected the prince.

“I make hima ecélone! of my Life! Guardé,and an officer of the househeld,” | ssid Peter.

“My rank, your Majesty knows, is| that of genoral,” protested Mentchikoff. |

“Then I make him a geveral, so that} the beating you get may come from a} man of your rank.”

The prince gota sound thrashing in the presence of the Czar, and the re- cruit was buextday commissioned a genera! with the title of Count Crisoff, zod was the founder of a powerful | family, whose descendants are still; high in the Imperial service of Russia.
