THERE are nineteen boot and shoe manu- factories in Montreal. According to Mr. Patterson’s report, they employ 2,250 per- sons of both sexes, and give support to 7,000. Not less than 150 different kinds of goods are produced. On 10,000 pairs of all descriptions, worth €12,000, are produced daily, or 5,000,000 pairs, worth $5,600,000 per annun. product of theseffactories is estimated to be two-thirds of what is manufactured in the entire Dominion. About ‘4 consumed in Canada, four per cent. ex- ported to Great Britain, and the balance of two per cent. goes to foreign countries, The production of the factories has more than doubled since 1863, and has increased in value about 20 per cent. since 1887.

A Monrreat firm is making preparations for the manufacture of siiks aad satins. It is to be hoped the people of the Dominion will encourage their en- terprise. The Gazette believes that the manufacture of those goods will assume large proportions. lt says: At present the factory of Messrs, Corriveau & Co., of this city, is turning out considerable quantities, fur which the firm find a ready demand and which are considered equal, and in some important points superior to the imported article. Messrs. Corriveau state that the existing tariff protects and fosters their in- terests, whilst it enables them to place their

Ihe Rifle-S2nd Battalion.

Tae fourth monthly competition of Ne. 3 (Captain Longworth’s) Company of the 82nd Battalion, for the company’s silver medal and officers’ badge, came to a close yesterday evening, and resulted in a hard- earned victory fer Sergeant Allan. The ranges were 200, 500 and 600 yards, 7 shots at each range, with the sighting shot. The day was exceedingly hot and the usual fish-tail wind favored the Company with its sad gusts; but, despite this drawback, some good scores were made. Sergeant Allan made the very respectable score of 82 out of a possible 105, and was clesely followed by Sergeant R. V. Longworth, private Neil Campbell and Captain Long- worth, whose scores we giye below. This shooting, considering the wind, was ex- ceedingly good, and we take much pleasure in congratulating Sergeant Allan on_ his success. There will be two more competi- tions for the medal and one for the badges, which bid fair to be the most interesting of all this tine Company's Rifle competitions, with the exception, perhaps, of the October shooting match for the Campany’s silver cup and other valuable prizes, when all the nerve and eyesight in the corps will be concentrated for a last determined trial of strength, We subjoin the scores of the four highest marksmen at the different ranges. ‘The highest possible scere at each range being 35 points, thus :—

_Lord Claud John Hamilton, second son of the Duke of Abercorn, ex-M. P. for | Lynn Regis, is to be the Conservative can- didate for Liverpool.

It is rumored that the Right Hon. Sir Fitroy Kelly, Lord Chief Baron of the Ex- chequer, will shortly retire, and that Sir Henry James, the present Attorney-CGener- al, will be raised to the Bench.

Lord Ripon’s private chaplaln, formerly of Oriel College, Oxford, leaves London for Bombay this month. Father Henry Schom- berg Kerr, late of the Royal Navy, and grandson of the late William, sixth Mar- quis of Lothian, is temporarily the new Governor-General’s spiritual adviser, pend- ing the arrival of the former. .

The death is announced of Mr. Alexander S. Deane, who was for some time engaged in connection with Mr. Stanley’s expedition in South Africa.
