Boston merchants are rivalling one another in rather questionable advertis- ing devices, A clothier removed all the goods from his show window, and put in their piace a big live monkey. For days the sidewalk was blocked with specta- tors, aad policemen had te be detailed to preserve order. ‘The free menagerie became such a nuisanee that the Mayor, decided it to be in the nature of a show, suppressed it as a place of unlicensed amusement. Another Clothier turned his window, which were very spacious, into a wax works exhibition surpassing in honor the objects in the crypt of the Eden Musee. This drew immense mul- titudes, and.as some of the exhibits were decidedly objectionable, the proprietor achieved his object in being talked about by the whole town. A third man at- tracted attention more pleasantly. He converted the plate glass of hia store frontiatoimmense mirrors in which gazers simply saw themselves more or less satisfactorily.

A meeting was held in Lowell Mass. on the 12th inst., of the stockholders in the Colwell triple thermic motor com- pany, a local organization owning a paient which its inventor claims is vast- ly superior to ordinary steam for mo- tive power. Direet information was re- fused the press, because it has ridculed the promises made by the company. It is learned, aj the same, that Rev. Dr. T. M. Colwell, pastor of the first Bap- tist Church there, who is at the head of the concern, made a statement of his doings, which was fully endorsed | by his associates. Chicago capital has been so far increased as to assure the erection of a manufactory, probably in that city, for manufacturing the Col- well machines.. For more than a year nothing has been done except to sell stock. If the managers are really pro- ceeding to practical work, they will remove the insinuations of fraud which have long been current.
