Tue progress of Montreal last year is shown very conclusively by the following Customs returns:—The duties received for the fiscal year ending 30th ult. were $7 .077,793, an increrse of $1,844,991 over 1880, $3,000,000 over 1879, and exceeding the most prosperous year Canada had ever previously known, that of 18745, by $1,200,000. The receipts for last June were $710,928, an increase of 25 per cent. over the corresponding month of 1889.

Were sop in the flesh at present and were the fact brought to his netice, he would doubtless write a fable showing there is a great deal of irony in the action of this beet. In this fable we wou!d not be surprised to hear a stranger ask. ‘“‘Mr. Beet: why growest thou upon the street?’ Mr. Beet, of course, would make the following answer, “Why, yeu see sir the P. E. Island farmer declines to experiment with me upen his farm. I therefore, to prove I am a profitable and easily grown plant, have to experiment upon the street.”

Tur Rev. Dr. MeKay, of the Formosa Mission, will addres. a public meeting, on Sabbath next, at 64 o'clock, in St. James’ Church; subject: ** Ais life and work in Formosa.” As Dr. McKay will leave the city on Monday moruing, the meeting now announced wall be the only opportunity for people here to hear this remarkable Mie- sionary relate his experience. The trustees of the church will en leavor to accommodate the largest number possible, with due re- gard to comfort and safety. A collection will be taken up in aid of the Formosa Mission. The Christian public are cordi- ally invited to atten. He will also speak in Zion Church, at 5 p. m,—-Com. [2i.

The strikers on the wharves opened hos- tihiies here, to-night, by firing on the police, who were protecting & gang of men at work on the Dominion Line of steamers. tu the evening the ‘longshoremen held a mass meeting in the east end when some exciting language was used. They subse- quently formed a procession and marched up te the tity along the warves. He is cheerful and asks for edditional food. | Attorney General McVeagh says the Presi- dent’s condition is very favorable indeed. He says he does not consider that the!
