Suppen Dearn.—The Summerside A gricul- tnrist says :—On Wednesday last, Mrs. Peter Gallant, while working inthe Hotel iuss, was stricken by a fit of appoplexy, caused by the bursting of a blood vessel im the head. Mr. Russ immediately summoned Dr. Me. Kay. who, on arrival, saw that the unfortun- ate woman had but a few hours tolive. He called in Dr. Gillis, and she was then con- veyed to her home, afew yards distant, where, despite medical skill, she died about eleven o'clock the same evening. The deceased was an elderly woman, and leaves several children.

A Previuran Cast.—An English paper records the following peculiar case: A woman recently made a very singular application to a Greenwich magistrate. She stated that she had two husbands, both of whom were the sons of one mother, but not of the same
father. The first husband died four years ago, and she married the second one eighteen months since. He would not now support her, and she asked advice as to the legality of her marriage, and wished to know what to do. The magistrate said that the question
was a conundrum which he could not answer. The law did not allow her to marry two brothers. The applicant, he said, had better throw herseif on the parish, and they would see the case settled for her,

The Universe has a despatch from Rome saying that the English cabinet accepts in principal the Pope’s mediation between England and Ireland, based upon Mgr. Persico’s report. The Pope demands moderate Home Rule and advises the Con- servatives to take the wind out of Glad- stone's sails by adopting the leading points of his programme with the support of the Irish clergy.
Another Railway Accident.
Pirtisspure, Pa., Jan. 16.
This afternoon a freight train on the Pittsburg & St. Louis Railway, while crossing a high bridge at Temperanceville Station, inside the city limits, eight freight cars left the track from a supposed opening rail. Two cars fell to the street, ninety feet, and were smashed to splinters. One employe was instantly killed and another seriously injured.
The Colliery Disaster.

Thousands of people yesterday visited the scene of the mining explosion at Ste)- larton. The explosion occurred in the Douglas Slope of the Albion Mine, and not in the cage pit as reported yesterday. Agent Poole says the mine is not irretriev- ably auined, but the damage done is enor- mous, besides throwing 300 miners out of work,

Queen vs. Madden and Dogherty—In- dictment for burglary. The trial lasted all day. The prisoners were acquitted, the evidence being purely circumstantial. Mr. Justice Peters, who tried the case, direct- ed the jury that before they could convict they must be satisfied beyond all reason- able doubt that the prisoners were guilty, and they must be satisfied of this by evi- dence, not mere suspicion or probabilities. The jury after a few minutes absence found a verdict of ‘‘Not Guilty.” Attorney-Gen- eral forthe Crown; F. Peters for prisoners.
Turspay, Jan. 17.
The Queen vs. Owen Smith and Joseph H. Dunne—Indictment for housebreaking and larceny. This case occupied the atten- tion of the Court all day yesterday. There being no evidence against Dunne, he was, on motion of his counsel, discharged. The ease against Smith went tothe jury, who remained out all night, and this morning reported that they could not agree upon a verdict, and were accordingly discharged. Smith will probably be tried again this evening. Attorney-General. fur Crown ; James H. Reddin for defendant.
McBride vs. Webster--Action for tres- pass. This case began yesterday, and is still before the Court. C. B. Macneill and F. Peters for plaintiff; E. J. Hodgson for defence.
In the case of R. R. Fitzgerald, 8. M., vs. William R. Frame, editor of the Island Guardian, application was to-day made by Mr. Macleod, the defendant's counsel, to have the case postponed on account of the illness of his client. Mr. Macleod pro- duced several affidavits, showing the pre- sent unfit condition of the defendant to be examined as a witness. The Court granted a rule nisi returnable to-morrow morning. A A + A$ —

Entertainment at New Glasgow.
On the evening of the 10th inst., an en- tertsinment was given at the above-named place by the members of Clyde Council, RK. T. of T. The night was all that could be desired, and before 7 o'clock the Hall was filled to its utmost capacity, many bein;; unable to obtain seats. It was the largest meeting ever held in New Glasgow Hall, upwards of four hundred being pre- sent. Mr. John Houston occupied the chair. The programme consisted of speeches, readings, recitations, dialogues,
, and music, vocal and instrumental solcs,
duets and quartets.
The speeches were good. The readings and recitations were better than those usually given here ; and the singing, under the efficient leadership of Miss Stevenson, was of a very high order, it being remarked since that it was the best ever given at a Concert in New Glasgow. The meeting was in every respect a grand success, and reflects much credit upon those who were instrumental in getting it up.
