NEWS NOTES, Nellie Bly has been visiting the famine- stricken regions of Kansas, and. she finds euffering there that almost beggars descrip- tion.

A gentlemen recently returned from Ontario says that he heard no talk about hard times among the farmers of that great Province.

Sir Charles Dilke has been studying the English situation, and sums up the case in asentence: “It is clear that although Lord Rosebery could win the Derby he cannot win elections.”

The Fruit G-owers’ association of Nova Scotia reports that the fruit crop of that province for the last year was worth $1.- 000,000. Of the apples raised 200,000 were shipped to England, bringing to the province some $500,000.

The Spanish West India market for pot- atoes has proved very attractive to the Nova Scotia fermers during last season. Kings County alone sent to Havana over 30,000 barrels besides those which were shipped by way of Halifax and Annapolis.

General Bvoth’s proposal to establish a colony in the Nerthwest will need carefal consideration befure it is accepted. The colonists would be men and women rescu- ed from “ihe lapsed masses of Darkest England.” So long as their penitence lasts, they may make in dustri- ous colonists, though in many cases the London slums do not offer the best train- ias ground for Canadian agriculture. But backsliders will simply add to the Domin ion’s burden of poverty and crime, and there should be some provision for send- ing the thrifvless and vicious back to Eng- lish workhouses and jails.

“Claus Spreckles, the sugar monopolist of the west coast, has declared war upou the Southern Pacific railway and he has subscribed $500,000 and his sons $200,- 060, tewards building another railway which shall free California from what has been called “the railway octopus.” Mr. Spreckles has been much of an octopus himself, and on that account should know how to deal with that sort of monster; but as Mr. Spreck!es’ coutract with the South-

rn Pacific to carry sugar at $7 a ton is about expiring, and the company threaten to raise the rate to $10 a ton, it is felt that his fight with the octopus can ‘be averted by the company gran ing the old rate.
