Tue attention of the Street Committee is called to several dangerous holes in the side walk at the entrance of the city, on the north side of the St. Peter’s Road, in the hope that they may be filled up. These holes were much observed yesterday. The Street Com- ee is doing excellent work in the town; but it is at the same time necessary 10 keep the holes tilled, and we have Councillor Kelly, the Chairman ot the Street Committee, will attend to this matter as soon as it is possible to do so.

Tales of Suffering and Distress,

Hawirax, Aug. 4.

Eight fishermen, who got astray from their vessels during a dense fog on the Banks, arrived here from St. Pierre yesterday, Four of the men are Nova Scotians, and the other four are Norwe- Some of them sutlered terribly from exposure, hunger and thirst before being rescued. ;

Two of the number, Larwlson and Oliver Hanson, got astray from the schr. David A. Story, on the banks, July 20th, and after three days and nights in an open dory they reached St. Lawrence, Ntid., where they sold their dory to pay their way to St. Pierre.

Charles Croyan and Chris Chlanson, of the schooner William H. Oakes, anchored on the banks, lost sight of their vessel in the same fog of July 20th. They anchored for 48 hours, but hope long deferred made their hearts sicks and they pulled for the shore. On the afternoon of the 23rd the barque Riteria, from St. John for Ireland, responded to their signals of distress, picked them up and subsequently transferred them to the fishing schooner Elizabeth Harvey.

Daly and Jeremiah Smith strayed from the schooner Frederick Gearing on the Green Bank on July 16th. They attempted to reach St. Pierre, and after four and a

half days of terrible suffering they were taken on board a French fisherman. Two days later they started to row to St. Pierre,

75 miles distant, and after five days more of exposure in an open dory they reached the land.

Michael Tobin and Levi Jewitt of the schooner Lizzie J. Greenleaf strayed away from that craft during a dense fog on Fri day, July 19th. After rowing for four days without food or water they were taken on board a French barque in an exhausted condition. They were finally landed at St. Pierre by a French fishing schooner.

The Arichat seiner, Life Boat, has returned from North Bay, P. E. Island, with a good fare of mackerel. Her Captain, Lavache, complains that the fishing grounds are practically unprotected. He says that he fished in Miramichi bay for three weeks, in company witha fleet of fifty American seiners, without seeing any signs of a cutter. The Americans pay no attention whatever te the three mile limit, but fish wherever they can take mackerel.

It is rumored in certain political circles that the returning officer refuses to declare Prefontaine elected for Chambly, on account of the St. Lambert vote—which possibly might have changed the result—being an- nulled, and that consequently a writ for a new election will probably be issued at. once.

A Lerrer from Liverpool to the Montreal

Gazette says that while the mortality among cattle shipments hence for Britain was last year exceptionally light, it has leaped from 0.30 to nearly 4 per cent. Regular liners are inaintaining splendidly the good name earned during the last couple of years, but the ocean tramps are playing the mischief withus. Out of 2,064 cattle aud 1,192 sheep reaching Liver- pool from Canadian and American ports for the week ended July 9th, twelve cattle and sixty-two sheep died on the voyage. All these twelve beeves and forty-six of the sheep died on board the Batavia.

The Managers of the Boston, Halifax and Prince Edward Isiand Steamship Line have to-day wired that, “Owing to the accident to the Gate City, it will become necessary to withdraw the Merrimack from the Eastern line to fill her place for a short time. In consequence of this the Carroll and Worcester will sail onee a week on the same schedule as formerly.
