A Brief Parliamentary Guide.

(From the King's County Advertiser.)

In a few days hence the members of the Dominion Commons and Senate will be set- ting out for Ottawa to attend the approach- ing session of Parliament, and it is in this direction that their constituents must look fur such reforms an | improvements as come within the jurisdisdiction of these honor- able gentlemen. Under the circumstances, no part of the Dominion can, perhaps, with equal fairness and justice, present a stronger claim to liberal treatment than little Prince Edward Island. To secure equal rights and privileges from this august body, while in session, is a vast undertak- ing, and requires the utmost vigilance and activity on the part of the handful of men sent up from here to contend with the grand army assembled from ever quarter of the Union. We are still of the number who believe that the reasonable expecta- tions of this Island will yet be fairly dealt with.

Nevertheless, it may not be out of place to take a cursory view of the principal ques- tions which in all prebability will present themselves before the session is ended.

Our representatives are to a man com- mitted to whatever measures may be in- treduced te bring about Reciprocity be- tween Canada and the United States. The latter having recently shown symptoms of uneasiness, heretofore unknown to them, under the provisional tariff put into opera- tion for the protection of the Dominion, many are beginning to hepe that our states- men will have an early opportunity of negotiating with them on this all-import- ant subject. When such a desirable change is already visible, no doubt our neighbors will ere long feel prepared to reciprocate with us on fair and honorable terms. Can the Island’s representatives then, we ask, be depended upon safely to support such a policy ?

The final settlement of the Fishery Award question is another important mat- ter affecting this Province, and our future weal or woe depends in ne small degree upon the decision of the General Govern- ment. It behooves our representatives to show unity and determination, otherwise disastrous results may follow. A final solution of this problem is the least we can expect, and we trust that the answer may be 2 satisfactory one. ,

Next in importance stands the question of winter steam communication, which has unfortunately, through selfishness or pre- judice, divided public opinion to a certain extent for some time past. ‘These barriers are, however, rapidly disappearing, and now that a practical and feasible experi- ment has met with unexpected success, it devolves upon our representatives to shake hands over their petty differences, and work harmoniously for the common welfare of the people.

In view ef the enormous expenditure in- curred by the tempest that swept off costly publie structures last autumn, and the cen- sequent drain upon the Provincial ex- chequer, strenuous efforts should be made to obtain grants fer every public work that properly belongs to the General Govern- ment, in order to assist as far as possible in maintaining the public works of the Pre- vince.
