Speaking of receipes, Ellen, "a busy farmwlfe has written, ''I wonder if you have ever made mo- lassea cookies my way? I've al- ways used this receipe, and . .. well, to tell you the truth, it's pret- ty difficult for me to keep any supply of them ahead when the children are around, they enjoy them so much! I can't tell you where the receipe originated, but it's the same one that mother used and so it was among the things I brought from home with me! ' "

And how dear these plants and slips and seeds from home can be! We recall now the tragic ex- pression on the face of the woman we happened to sit beside in the "terminal the few minutes while awaiting the bus that was to carry us home. She was a neat elderly lady. a stranger to us. attractive in her years, low-voiced and a lit- tle bewildered we supposed in her lengthy trip and from the quiet of her farm to the bustle and noise of the city to attend to the busin- cos affairs of her living. We chat- ted of the weather: of the crops- Jsmes was at the hay-cutting that morning, and before we knew it we were into more intimate mat- ters. She opened. rather nervous- ly, a shopping bag to check its con- tents with "A woman alone has so much to attend to when she comes to town. I'm wondering if I'm after forgetting something -- or else leaving something not done!” She sighed. SKIN TIIBEBCIIIDSIS CURIED BY CALCIFEBOL

I recall a patient at our base nos- pltal suffering with skin tubercul- osis (lupus) whom at the time, 1 was unable to help. This was dur- ing World War I. I saw him a few months ago and his skin con- dition was Just the same. I told him about the new treatment for lupus and suggested that he ask his physician about investigating the drug. calciferoi, which was helping so many cases.

During the past two years I have been recording cures by cal- ciferol from various parts of the world. I do this because the former treatment for lupus has given such poor results.

In "Archives of Dermatology and Syphllology.” Chicago, Drs. H. E. llfichclson and J. R. Huarick re- port their experience in treating 15 patients with tuberculosis of the skin and other skin diseases with calciferol. At first vlosterol in Oil was used, and later a solution of cnlcifercl in propylene glycol idrisdoll. These research workers state that calcifercl is a valuable help in the treatment of skin and modular (lumpy) tuberculosis. It has exceptional value in the treat- ment of lupus vulgaris. a very com- mon form of skin tuberculosis al- though just why it is so helpful in this formerly almost imurable dis- ease is still unknown.

I have written before of the great success in the treatment of lupus and other skin ailments by combin- ing streptomycin with calciferol which brought about a cure in less time than by use of calclferol alone. While there was little or no toxic (poison) symptoms from use of calciferol. calciierol was not used in any patient with arterios- clerosis (hardening of the arter- ies) )or if any damage was present in the kidneys. When any toxic symptom or reaction qccurred from use of calciferol, the earliest sign was nausea with anorexia. (loss of appetite), and headache. In no case in which the patient was amb- ulatory (able to be on his feet) was it. necessary to stop using cal- ciferol. Of eight bedridden pat- ients, five had reactions severe enough to stop the use of calciferoil.

I am writing often about the many cures of lupus by calciferol because this disfiguring disease had been considered in-curaible be- fore the discovery of the value of

calciferoi.

4 eggs. separated

Pinch salt.

ii cup cold water

1 tablespoon sugar

1 tablespoon butter

Jelly

Beat egg yolks slightly. Add sugar, salt and water; beat until thick and'lemon colored. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Heat butter until moderately hot, pour in the omelet mixture. Cook over low heat until omelet. puffs up and is golden brown and firm on un- derside.

Place pan in moderately hot oven (350F.) for 10-15 minutes. or until surface seems set when lightly pressed with fingers.

Loosen sides of omelet with spat- ula. Cut about half way down through the centre. Spread one- half thickly with jelly which was beaten until soft. fold. other half over this, without breaking it. Turn out onto hot. serving dish and serve at once.

To insure good results when painting. the surface to be coated must be thoroughly dry. Moisture. if allowed to remain in the wood will eventually be drawn to the surface by the heat and cause blis- tering of the paint.

To make linen goods glossy, and prevent starch sticking to the iron. add a teaspooniful of salt, or a few drops of turpentine or glycerine, to the starch when making it.

Pirates of The Insect World

"Oh, not Not” sold the little fly, "to ask is in vain; ,

For who goes up your wlndlns stair can ne'er come down sgainl"

so sang the cunning Wider, and when the fly said "no", the spider continued by using such flattering words as sweet creature" and "pear- ly -winged one with eyes like bright diamonds". Puffed up with these endearing names, the silly fly drew so near the enemy's enchanting palace that it soon found itself hopelessly ensnared in the cleverly wrought web.

Then came the spider; the poor fly was now led up the winding stair and into the parlour, where it was devoured pronto..

Generally spiders do not bother human beings and naturalists te.l us they prefer darkness to light; but they delight in creeping into our homes, hiding in all sort: of out-of-the-way places. There. if not destroyed or frightened away. they make clever homes and lie low until some unsuspecting insect falls into the web-trap. should the day prove fruitless, however, the spider doesn't worry too much. He knows that his web is almost fool-proof and tomorrow may bring him bet- ter luck. .Spiders have a prodigious appetite. often eating as many as eighty insects in a single day.

Henri Farbe, an observant na- turalist who lived in France many years ago, devoted long hours to watching these little pirates in -work and play.. Farbe tells us that the courting season often ends in tragedy, that the males woo too ardently. "The little male grabs a. buxom female, greatly his superior in strength and size, then with their hideous faces brought into contact, they exchange what I scorpion poet might: dignify with the name of a kiss. Then off they prance, the male grasping the fe- male's claws; he walks backward, leading his wife after him. They may promenade for hours, even for days, in this way, till finally he in- duces her to approach a burrow which he has made. Once the fe- male accepts-the and comes quick- ly... the spider lady sits down and dines-on her bridegroom.

That he is not stung to death as a fly is the reason a scorpion is immune to his own poison. Many persons do not like spiders because they are strange-looking creatures, cannlbals and pirates, and yet, these tiny insects are among the most. interesting forms of animal life. They were spinners and weavers, builders and engineers, when the world was young. How the spider originally succeeded in converting food into natural glue is a mystery which scientists have have yet to explain,

The spider uses its silken thread to scale steep preciplces, as well as to cross narrow streams, etc. in proporation to its size and weight. this wonderful cable is stronger than the finest steel ever made, and so light. that it floats into the air and adheres to any object that happens to be in its path. The lit- tle spider can reel off yards of web upon which it is able to travel at a rapid pace. .

Baby spiders are no less interest- ing than their parents. In somo species, the mother lay her eggs and when they are incubated, she carries the youngesters about on her back for several months, dur- ing which time they neither eat. nor drink. Think of in now do these curious children of nature survive and manage to develop under such extraordinary hard- ships? Hcre is another mystery that needs 801Vln8. but survive they do; and. when their baby days are over, The mother shakes them off and they are obliged to fend for themselves. By this time, however. the young scorpions are able tospin their own -webs; and like their par- ents, become marvellous engineers and builders.
