ST, JOHN'S (CUP)—- The only solution to the fin— ancial squeeze at Atlantic universities is to relate government grant and tui— tion fee increases in op- erating costs, according to John Anderson, presi— dent of the University of New Brunmick.

Speaking after a meet- ing of the executive of " the Association of Atlan- tic Universities here Oct. 19 Anderson said that even substantial fees in- ' creases would, however, have little effect on to— tal university budgets.

Anderson said doubling fees would leave that por— tion of the revenue insig- nificant at UNB, where tu— ition represents about 15 per cent of the total, down from 40_'per cent a few years ago.

The conference next weekend will give the students in the Atlantic Region opportunity to assess the value of CUP. And suggest the direction they would like to see it move.

Recently, the P..E.I. government purchased a 35— acre plot of prime agricultural land in the Wilmot area for the express purpose of an Interpretive Centre sim- ilar in style and function to that built at Poole's Corner. This direction exemplifies government action to cater to' an exclusive and seasonal customer, namely tourists. This seems a deliberate "sell—cu " of a complete way of life, a movement from a traditionally based agricultural economy.

If present environ— mental groups feel that the Island has definite sites worth designation as "natural areas", then why this attitude from our policy-makers? With the

sale of most of our water- front areas to "absentee landlords", the planned expansion of the National Park- along the north shore and its subsequent deterioration, the expansion of urban devel— ogtent housing and the formation of "bedroom communities", is it too late to begin? With the loopholes now existent

in the sale of land to foreigners (re: sale of 800 acres in French

River to one company) and the growing rumors of financial problems at Dundas Farms, many Islanders will have plenty of time to wonder where community spirit, young Islanders and dignity have gone. The prostit— ution of P.E.I. has been completed - at our expense.
