Tue examination of the classes of Prince of Wales College has been proceeding for the past few days. The Rev. K. McLen- nan has completed the examination of the students in classics; F. Peters, Hsg., in mathematics; and John Cayen, Esq., is now examining the students in French, English History, Literature, and Ancient history.

THERE was a very large market to-day— the largest for some months. Prices were tlower than heretofore, as follows :—Beef, small, from 8 to 15 cents ; de., by the quar- ter, from 7 to 10 cents ; mutton from 7 to 12 cents; lamb, per quarter, 50 cents to $100, veal, per lh:, 3 to 7. cents; perk, by the carcass, 5 to 5} cents; butter,. fresh, from 19 to-22 cents ; eggs, 84 to 9 cents ; potatoes, 20 to 25 cents; oats, 45 to 45 cents ; hay, 50 to 66, eents.

A trespass case was trie? before Theoph. DesBrisay, Esq., this forenoon, between James MeCulloch’ vs. Patrick MeGuirk and James McGuirk, of Dromore Settlement. The nature of the trespass was: that the de- fendants, on the 26th ult., broke a road fence on the plaintiffs premises, and when the plaintiff remonstrated with them for doing so, they fired several longers at him, which struck and did him bodly harm. ‘The

ss was proven, and ithe defendants were both fimed $1 and costs or 50 days imprisonment. Action will also be taken against them for assault.

Wiwrer Rre.—We have in our sanctum several stalks of Winter Rye, which were handed to us yesterday by a gentleman of this city, who ‘says he plucked them in a field, on the Malpeque Road, belonging to Thomas Morris, Esq. The stalks measure about three feet long, and the ears, which are well formed, are some seven inches in length, and would likely ripen in about four or five weeks more. The seed which produced these stalks was probably mixed with other seed sown on the farm above re- ferred to about June last. Would it not be well for some of our farmers to try a small crop of Winter Rye, and see if it can- not be cultivated here with success and

profit?

Tue Concert last night im connection with the Baptist Sunday School of this city was in every way successful. The Chair was ozscupied by Mr. G. McLeod, Assistant Superintendent. A piece in which fifteen of the scholars recited in concert, was very well rendered. We have not space to men- tion the names of all these who took part in the Concert ; the number was large and the programme lengthy, but two who seemed to please the audience deserve special mention. Ada Hendly, a hitle child of about three or four years of age, sang and recited remarkably well for one so young. A recitation named ‘‘Now-a- days, or when I was young,” by Miss Glover, was very amusing and elicited ap- plause. Others, in our estimation, per- formed equally well, especially the younger children, whose artless simplicity gave an air of naturalness to what they uttered and sung. The singing by the whole school was fair. Miss Davics presided at the Organ and contributed largely to the sue- cess of the Concert. ‘The Church was crowded to its utmost capacity and ail pre- sent seemed to be exceedingly pleased and delighted with the evening’s entertainment. Concerts like the one of last night form one of the most pleasing features of Sabbath School work. They tend to draw into more ‘intimate connection teachers and acholars, parents and pastors, and we only regret that our Sunday Schools generally do not favor us more frequently with musical aud literary entertainments. They tend’ to develop the mental faculties of childie1 and piomot; happiness in connec- tion with religion. A collection was taken up at the Concert, the proceeds to be used for some charitable puapose.

Josrrk Farrcniip, Esq., returned from St. John, N. B., yesterday, whither he had gone for the purpose of purchasing machin- ery for the steamer in course of construction for the Montague Ferry. We learn that he intends having the hull of the steamer in readiness in time this summer, so that she may be sent after the machinery and return before winter sets in.—Advertiser.

JoHN O'Brien, a brakesman, who was jamimed between two railway cars at Point da Chene, on Tuesday, while coupling, died yesterday. His injuries were in the chest. ’ Brien belonged to the Upper Provinces, and had been engaged in railroading for 1) years. He had a wife and children in Bos- ton, and while he lay unconscious and dy- ing atthe Point a letter from his wife ar- rived for him. He was attended im his last moments*hy Father Foley, his medical at- tendants being Drs. Leger and Ross.— M meton Times.

On the 16th inst., John Kelly, Jr., of the drm of John Hickler & Co., contractors on the Lachine Canal, Montreal, mysteriously disappeared with a large amount of money in cash and drafts in his posssession, which he was seeking to invest, and of his private funds. Every possible enquiry has been made by the detective force and his friends, but no clue to his whereabouts has been discovered. He left with the intention of going to Ottawa. Mr. Kelly is about forty years of age, stout, medium height, light moustache and gray hair ; he is a large real estate owner in, and a man of wealth and of prominence of, the City of Buffalo, N. Y., and ®well acquainted in the United States and Canada. » Foul play is suspected.
