Taxation in Canada.

THE EXAMINER stated that the amounts paid to the Govern- ment for railway tickets, postage stamps, etc..—-amounting in 1585 to $7,731,050 were not t be regarded as taxes imposed, but as payment for services rendered by the Government; and the Patriot retorts that | it supposed, in its simplicity, that ‘all | taxes were paid for some kind of service.” How clever, and how witty !

But neither great cleverness nor great

The failure of the wheat crop in the West and Northwest will, no doubt, cause a rise in breadstufis, and Canadian farmers who are so furtunate as to raise good crops of wheat will probably be able to obtain re- munerative prices for what they have to sell. —The following is an extract from a private letter received from a resident of Northern Dakota by a gentleman in this city: ‘Dakota gets a black eye this year: not over a half, possibly not a third of a crop. In the section 1 am in some whole counties —not over a quarter crop.”

But I can tell *‘Creel” that the statement he has made with regard to netting in the Wheatley River, has not the slightest particle of truth in it. There has not been a net cast or set inthe Wheatley River for many years. The angler’s sport and fishing of trout is as good there as ever it was. The Fishery Warden at Wheatley River does his duty fearlessly, as some of those sports whom ‘‘Creel” refera to in the seventh clause of the article in question, and likely **Creel” himself well knows.
