Then the explosion came. On the long 17th, Nagle, after two beeming shots, flipped a beau- 'tiful wedge to within 4% feet and sank for a birdie four.

Behind him, Player was run- ning into difficulty.

On the 218-yard 16th, with its elevated tee and elevated green and valley between, Player pumped his tee shot into the yawning trap at the right.

He blasted out to within 15 feet. His putt lipped the cup, | almost dropped in and veered |two feet past. Player putted again—the putt that a duffer can't miss. The bal banged against the back of the cup and bounced off, 18 inches away. It was three putts and disas- ter.

PERFECTION ENDS

Until that point, Player had played almost flawless golf. He reeled off six straight pars, a
