We have hed an opportunity to test the Patent Safety Lamp | and amp feeder of Mr. Sohn Newell, of this city, im regard to the measure of protection their construction affurds. In the trisls to which we subjected them, we endeavoured, without effect, te produce explosions of the vapor of the @uil mixed with air, and to burst them by the pressure of the vapor alone. The principle adopted by Mr..Newell is that of the well known Davy Lamp. He has so combined the parta, that we are satisfied that all risk of explosive action is removed.

Mr. John Newell, of Boston, hae exhibited to me a Lamp, and also containing vessels, furnished with wire gauze protec- tors, upun the principle of Davy’s Safety Lamp for miners. He has used both those instruments before me with inflammable fluids, and in both, when set on fire, the flame was arrested by the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are faithfully constructed, and carefully attended to, so that the wire gauze do not suffer injury from corrosion, wear, or violence, | am of opinion that the protection will prove effectual against explosion. Nothing short of this conviction would in- duce me to countenance the continued use of the burning fluids, so called, as [ have thought they ought to be entirely discarded, if not prohibited from use: so frequent and dreadful are the accidents occasioned by ignorance and carelessness. In every case, glass |amps should be given up, and those of meta] sub- stituted, on account of the danger of fracture.
