An Indian from San Blassa district, in this State, on the Atlantic, brings in a re- port that on Sept 7th, the day on which the earthquakes occurred here, there were four tidal waves, which overwhelmed and destroyed or badly damaged six or seven litile villages on the Island and mainland and drowned about 70 persons.

To-day has been observed as a hal: holiday in honor of the visit to the city of President Arthur and party. The Pre- sident, accompanied by Secretaries Lincoln and Chandler of his Cabinet, his son, Chester A. Arthur, jr., Private Secretary Phillips and others, arrived from New York this morning and were received byGov Long, May or Green, a city committce and military escort and taken to Boston Common. The procession formed composed the entire State militia, and the Presidential party with other guests and some officials were escorted through the principal streets to Hotei Brunswick, where the procestion was re- viewed. In the afternoon an informal re- ception to citizens was held in Faneuil Hall, when the President and Secre- taries Chandler and Lincoln briefly return-

driven about the suburbs by city officials, In the evening an informal reception and banquet were given in their honor at Hotel Brunswick, at which a notable gathering, numbering nearly three thonsand, were present during the evening.
