Lillie Boy loses Eyes in Fight To Beat Cancer

ORLANDO. Fla. (AP) - Mike Sibole'a eyesight was sacrificed Wednesday to give him a 50-50 chance of growing to manhood but in a world of darkness.

The surgeon who removed the four-year-old boy's left eye this morning. asking to remain anony- mous. said it is an even chance that with the eye and a large sec- tion of the optic nerve came all the cancer cells which have cost Mike both eyes.

The last thing Mike saw was a doctor in a green skull cap bend- ing over to administer the ether at 7:55 a.m. EST. The operation started at 0:10 and ended at 3:51.

Mike was a brave patient, the doctors reported. He didn't cry and he wasn't afraid.

OTTAWA (CP) mu Defence Min- ister Campney Wednesday denied charges levelled at his department by Lt.-Gen. Guy Simonds who re- tired last summer as army chief of staff. ,

He dealt specifically in the Com- inons with allegations by Gen. Si- lncnds in a magazine article that the chiefs of the armed forces are denied an opportunity to place their views before the minister and that the Canada-United States joint board on defence acts as a barrier between the Canadian and American chiefs of staff.

Mr'. Campney said the chiefs are consulted "at every turn" on development of military policy. They could always confer with him and did so "very frequently."
