Censorship in Canada had its bo- ginnings in the romantic Chateau St. Louis and two vivid historical figures were involved. They were Frontenac, who had imitated, to the best of his ability. the court of Versailles, in the Court of St. Louis, and the Bishop St. Valiler, who so severely denounced Cans- dian girls for bedccking their heads with ribbons, and wearing satins and laces. Anxious to lni- mic Versailles, Frontenac hull al- lowed the production of comedies in the Chateau st. Louis. The Bis- hop dreaded the appearance of “Tartllffc," a comedy which he re- garded as the last word in objec- tionable drama. He warned and threatened Frontenac against its production. and finally offered him a thousand francs to suppress it. Frontenac, who had no notion of producing it. calmly accepted the thousand francs, and turned it over ntoxt day lo the hospital for char- i y.

From the family view point this practice in both convenient and economical. The daughter acts as c. business secretary for her fa- ther M. P.. and a social secretary for her mother. Her time and dut- ies are those of the family-.
