Death Yesterday of French iilvdr Lady

The death occurred. after a ling- ering iiinen. in the Prince County Hospital on February lat of Mrs. William A. Bernard, French River, at the age of 73 years. Although death was not unexpected, news of her passing comes as a great shock in a wide circle of friends.

She leaves to mourn besides her aorrowing husband. two sons and two daughters. Mra. Halsey Profitt (Charlotte). Burlington; Mu. James Cole (Myrtle), New London: Walter in San Diego, California; and Fred on the old homestead. One sister, Mrs. E. C. Hiitz, Berwick. NS. and two brothers. William Morrison. Van- couver. and H-uig-h Morrison in Summerside, also survive.

The funeral will be held Satur- day morning from her late res- idence at 2:00 o'clock to the Geo- die Memorial Church at New Lon- don. Interment will be in the church cemetery.-5.

S'side Board Discusses Street Mall Delivery

mttees drawn up previous to the regular meeting by the council of the Board.

Mr. J. F. Arnett, speaking on the proposed street mail delivery, said that. he and the members of the committee had met with Mr. J. Watson MacNaught, M. 13., who had stated that apparently there was no doubt that the project would go through. In view. how- ever, of the impending change in the number of street. deliveries daily all across Canada. which will go into effect in March, the com- mittee'was referring the matter back to the Board for their opin- ion as to whether the street de- livery was still desired. The mini-

bar of deliveries made after the change becomes effective will be one daily to private houses and

two to the business houses. It was the general opinion of the mem- bers present that street delivery was still desirable and Mr. Arnett said that this was a progressive step and should be pressed for now, otherwise this Town might never enjoy the service.

Mr. Eric MacKay of the Post Office staff informed the meeting that two representatives of the Postal Department from saixit John. N. B., would be in Summer- side within the next few days to conduct a. survey of the Town in connection with the proposed ser- vice. The meeting went on record as still favoring the inauguration of the street delivery mail service.

Teacher Shortage in iiural Schools

TORONTO. Fab. 1 - (CP) - Aimost 200 one-room schools are closed in Canada because there are no teachers to staff them, tr.e Canadian Education Association re-ported Wednesday.

The teacher shortage in urban areas had improved 15 per cent in the last year. Prince Edward Island. New Brunswick. the R0- man Catholic system in Quebec and Alberta reported no shortage in ur-ban elementary and reconn- ary schools. All four have short- agcs in rural schools.

The C. E. A. estimated the total shortage of teachers in Canada at 5.856. Teachers not fully qualified were counted as vacancies.

Of 193 rural schools closed, 100 are in the Quebec Catholic system. Others are scattered among six. f the other nine provinces. None is closed in Ontario. Saskatchewan or British Columbia.

legion To Open First Aid Course In Summergside

In connection with the civil de- fence programme. the Burnmersirio branch of the Canadian Legion has initiated a first aid course in sum- merside which will open on next Monday at the Summerstde High school and will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings thereafter from 7.30 to 9.09 o'clock.

Qualified instructors will be on hand to conduct the course and all interested should avail themselves of this opportunity to learn first aid. Aside from the possibility mat. the knowledge gained will be used in case of an emergency, the course is invaluable to parents in dealing with accidents around the home.--S
