County. GENTLEMEN ; A party, consisting of ten, in the House of Assembly, —seven of whom either voted against me at the hustings, 1n May last, or used their

influence to prevent my return—having declar-

ed my s , ps2 caegiiitt my right to sit therein, either on ac-

count of the majority of votes polled by me at that time (in May last), or in virtue of my former indenture, and a Writ having been issued for the election of a member in my place ; still entertaining the highest regard for the honour you have, on former occasions, confer- r2d upon me—deeply grateful for the confidence you have reposed in me—and justly anxious to vindicate my public character from the as- persions of your enemies and mine, not only before you, but before the country at large, I have again to appeal to you for an expression of your opinion upon my public conduct.

With reference to the proceedings of this upright snd unprejudiced party—as they have affected, and do affect me, as your late repre- sentative, and you, as my late constituents—it is enough, at present, for me to remind you of the fact, that their proceedings are foreign to the practice of the Mother Country (which, however, they always profess themselves most desirous to copy), are unauthorized by any Sta- tute Law of this Island, and unsanctioned by ‘any precedent in its history.

Had this party succeeded in making me their tool, as they hoped to do, you would, I am cer- tain, have been spared the additional burden which will be cast upon you by the ensuing election. But what then would have deen my position and reward? By a free-will act of my own, having exchanged the condition of a freeman, for that of a slave, I should have been sensible of little besides my own degradation, and have experienced nothing but constant mortification, arising from a secret conviction of my own unworthiness, manifested by my

Five Pounds Reward.

HEREAS one of my servants returning

peacably home from my Farm on foot, on Saturday even- ing last, the 19th iast., shortly before ten o’clock, was met by several men going from Charlottetown, in three or four sleighs, in one of which was a woman, and without having given the least provocation, was knocked down and beaten by several of the men with sticks. If any person will ay such evidence as will convict these cowardly ruffians, he or she shall receive on so doing the above reward.
