THE ARMENIAN OUTRAGES,

An Armenian agitation has bee started in Berlin, and effurts are being made to open a public purse for the benefits of Christians in Asia Minor. The results are very meagre. The stories of blood eurdling outrages as published week in and week out by the British press are accepted only with a large quantity of salt in Ger- many. London newspaper’, which are the sole source of information at present,are supposed to be manipulating the Armen- ian news to suit England’s politicn! aims, most notably to strip up Europe against

the Porte. While not denying that some outrages may have occurred,

the German editors agree that judgment should be suspended. They also warn the Government to watch closely the British game which they suspect is to co-operate with Russia or to please ber by bullying the Porte independently. The Munich Allegemein Zeitung has published an ar- ticle by Osman Bey, a conspicuous Turk- ish official, who wished to lay before the German public the Porte’s views of the Armenian trouble. Ozman Bey blames the Anglo-Armenian committee in London for fostering revolution in Armenia and incit ng both Turks and Armenians to atrocities merely for the purpose of making political capital. il beste CHINA AND JAPAN,

The treaty of peace between China ard Japan secures to Japan entire freedom in the importation into China of steam en- gines and machinery for manufactures. and the game privileges are ac orded to other countries in this matter. The latter also grants to Japan extra territorial rights, where, in the matters of tariff and the dis- pensation of justice, Japan reserves every privilege. The indemnity is payable in seven year installments at 5 percent in- terest. Payment of the obligation within three years cancels the iuterest.

In additional to these provisions China engages not to punish returned prisoners nor to inflict punishment upon Chinese who may have furvished supplies to the Japanese army and navy, China also binds herself to return Japanese prisoners unconditionally. The exchange of ratifica- tions of the treaty will take place at Chee Foo not later than May 8.

Well-informed circles at St. Petersburg consider it inevitable that the Furopean powers should revise the terms of peace arrived at between China and Japan. Russia, it is understood, is particularly determined upon taking this step, as the contemplated cession of Chinese territory involves danger to her interests in the Far Kast.

ANSWER TO MOODY’sS PRAYER.

A storm, accompanied by torrents of rain, burst over Fort Worth, Texas, on Sunday night, while Evangelist Moody was holding service in the Tabernacle be- fore an audience of 10,000 people. The immense congregation had just joined in singing al ymn ~vhen acrackling noise was heard and then the roof sank and the raft- ers gave way and heavy timbers, and boards covered with tur and gravel came down on jon of the congregation.

Mrs Shortis, mother of the Valleyfield murderer, arrived at Montreal from Ire- land on Monday. She visited her son,con- fined in jail awaiting trial. The meeting between mother and son was truly path- etic, and before it ended the latter showed signs, for the first time since the terrible tragedy, of being visibly affected.

They have dispensed with moral tri- butes at the opera in New York. Last Tuesday night two plush-lined cases were passed up over the footlights containing silver wreaths of Jaurel, one for Jean and the other for Edouard de Roszke. As flowers are quoted nowadays, h wever, silver wreaths are scarcely more extrava- gant.

A despatch to the Patriot says that Mr. B. P. Duchemin carried otf the Governor- General’s gold medal at Dalhousie College and graduated with high honors in clas- sics. Mr. Duchemin is a son of Mr. Albert Duchemin, of Charlottetown, and has always been an exceptionally clever stud- ent. We understand that he will not re- turn home this spring, having accepted a possition as teacher in the Normal School at Truro.

The motor shown below is operated entirely by the expansion and ceontrac- tion of metal by the direct application ot heat. The bands shown are so con nected with spring's that when one bau ! is expanded it releases its hold ou th. springs while the other band is ree iv ing the full pressure of the springs “Pyromo,” says The Scientific Ameri can, is the name given this mo‘or by its inventor, Dr. W. W. French, of Fort Branch, Ind. The engraving repre- scuts a sectional side elevation of the motor, a loosely rotating wheel having aa exterior expanding and contractiny rim preferably made by sets of metal ic bands arranged one alougside the other.

The bands are subj ected to the near from gas burners which open into a hood on one side of the whee!, and the ends; of each band pass over pulleys journaled in suitable bearings in the sides or spid -rs of the wheel, the two sets of bands pass- ing over corresponding s. ts of alternate ly arranged pull-vs. The end; of the bands, after passing over the pulleys, connect with links in the middle of the outer leaves of elliptical springs, th- ae being attached, at the middle of their inner leaves, to rods secured in th > sides of the wheel. Each link has a turn buckle, whereby the length of the link may be inercased or diminish-d, and the |l-vers are con nected by o’her links with a disk on a crank arm on the shaft. The bands o each set connect at their ends with th« same springs, and they connect by inde pendent links with separate levers op posite cach other and connected with opposite sides of the disk on the shaft, As a band is heated from the burner , its expansion releases a set of springs, whose closing power is exerted on the ends of another band, and through the two links and lever a pull is exerted on the disk to cause the wheel to rotat« in the direction of the arrow. A simila: operation takes place with the oth. bands. The motor is designed to b self-governing, the springs establishin a vielding councction _ between th: bands and levers, to prevent the band trom breaking and take up slack unt the running temperature is reached.

DOUBLE-DASHER CHURN.

The two dashers with which thi: churn is provided. one having a vertic and the other a rotary movement om: be operated together or either dashes may be used independent of the o her. It has been patented recently. ‘The body of the churn has exterior pins on

opposite siacs, each pin adapted to enter an angular slot in one of the side standards, and the cover is made in two sections, flanged to iit over the upper edge of the boiy. In the upper ends of the standards is journaled a shaft adapted to be op rat d by a belt from a band wheel, th: shaft having a crank arm, anda beveled gear being ad- justably secured on it, the latter mesh- ing withasimilar gear on the upper end of a vertical -haft on whose lower end is secured the hub of a rotary dash- er.

Plates of somewhat diamond shape extend diagonaliy from the hub, the plates being adapted toagitate the milk at the bottom of the churn body, Siid- ing upon the vertical shaft is a sleeve upon which are located two apertured disks, cons'ituting the vertical dasher, to which movement is communicated by means of a link connecting the upper

end of the sleeve with the crank portion of the driving shaft at th: top. By sim-

lv disconnecting the upper end of th» ink fromthe crank the movement of the vertical dasher ceas’s, and a slight lateral movement of the driving shaft disconnects the bevel gears through which the rotary shaft ‘s operated, both movements being thus readily control- led by the op-rator for the use of both dashers together or either one separate- ly, as may be desired.

Soda Prepelled Engines,

A firele-s Jocomotive engine was re- cently used on the Aix-la-Chapelle Julich Railway. The motor power is derived from soda. The invention is based on the principle that solutions of caustix soda, which have high boiling poiuts, liberate heat while absorbing steam. These engines eject neither smoke nor steam and work noiselessly. Compared with coal-burning locomotives, soda en- gines show a capacity equal to the former, while they are worked with greater ease and simplicity.

Mrs. Lease, the Kansas woman suffra- gist, who has a seat in the legislature, has fallen upon evil ways. In the investigation before the State Board of Charities one of the witnesses testified that Mrs. Lease actually swore on one occasion, applying to an official the vigorous and opproprious epithet of “devilish old reprobate.” This is simply awful, and shows the debasing influence of much familiarity with the wicked affairs of the world.
