It is said that Lord Dufferin has telegraph ed to Ottawa for the sleighs and other winter trappings remaining unsold at the sale of his effects last summer, to be forwarded to St. Petersburgh at once.

SIxTy-szveNn bags of mail matter arrived in this city, via Cape Traverse, yesterday even- ing. It is the only mail we have received since Wednesday. The largest portion of it was composed of letters.

Hymeneat.—St. Dunstan’s Cathedral was crowded this morning at 9 o’clock, with a more curious than religious congregation. On that occasioa three couples were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony. This is not, by any means, an it:m which denotes dull times.

Anoruer artilleryman named Evart John- ston, of the 10th Royal Brigade, was found frozen to death at the Town Road, Halifax, on Thursday morning last. One of the same Com- pany was found frozen to death near the same place a week or two ago.

ALASKA seems to be ina bad way. The In- dians there are threatening to annihilate the whites and many families are fleeing from the anticipated attack. Th: se whites who remain This is bad news, as the Indians are very numerous

~and the whites very few.

Ow Saturday evening a very melancholy ac cident occurred at Mount Stewart. While Mr. James McAulay was returning from Mt. Stewart late that night, he lost his way and fell into crack in one of the marshes at the head of the river, and was drowned before any assistance could be rendered him.

Exatanp’s New Cuampron Scutter.—The New York Herald says: ‘‘ Elliott has beaten Higgins, the English champion sculler, and so won a place among the famous ones—Cham. bers and Kelly, Renforth and Sadler—who for years held the championship of England against all comers.”

Tue ‘‘ Northern Light” arrived at George- town on Sunday evening at 4 o'clock with freight and passengers. She left Pictou on Tuesday last. Since then she has been in the Straits a captive of the arctic King Ice. Her propeller ia slightly injured. No other accidents are reportel to her.

’ Sesaror How an’s ILtxess.—The Ottawa Citizen says: ‘‘ Owing to an accident, it is ex- pected that Senator Howlan will not be able to reach the capital until late in the session. It appears the hor rable gentleman undertook to disinfect one of his vessels on which a case ef small-pox had been reported, when some of the drug got into one of his eyes, and injured him so severely that he has since been confined to his room.”

An Englishman, named Alexander DeFore, who arrived at Halifax a short time ago from the States, and has since been homeless, at- ¢empted to commit suicide on Thursday morning in the Police Station where he had taken refuge. He went into the water closet and stabbed himself in the throat and body eighteen times with a pen-knife. Medical aid was called, and it is thought he will recover. No cause known except that he was homeless and penniless.

Mr. Strcart D. MuLxrys, of the Saskatche- wan Herald is in Ottawa. He holds the opinion that there will be trouble with the Indians in that country yet, it only being a question of time. Buffalo are beeoming scarce, and as these animals are the principal source of live- lihood for the red men the natives feel the

inch of want at times, and when they do they drop into the settlements and demand food. Another cause of complaint by the In- dians is the presence of the Sioux, let by Sit- ting Bull, within the border, who are killing off the buffalo by the hundrecs and drivirg them further back into the wilds. The Crees and Blackfeet feel inclined to unite and drive the Sioux back into the States again, feeling that the strangers have no right to come in ‘spon their farm.

At five o'clock this evening the train from Tiguish reached Alberton, the train coming east from Summerside reaclied Kensington, and_ the train going west from this city reached Wilt- shire. At the same hour the train going cast from this city reached York Station, the train from Souris reached Bear River, and both locomotives on the train from Georgetown were off the track two miles east of Baldwin Station. At Bedford, York, Union and Wilt- shire Stations the snow is level with the snow fences, i. ¢., twenty feet high. It is thought by the Railway authorities that the trains will commence running regularly on Wednesday morning.

The ‘ Citizen” makes the following an- nouncement regarding the reorganization of the Intercolonial Railway :—C. Schreiber to be Engineer-in-Chief of Government Railways and head of the Railway Depart ment at Ottawa ; D. Pottinger, Chief Super- insendent, with head office at Moncton ; J. Coleman, Superintendent of St. John and Halifax division; A. Busby, Superintend- Northern Division; L. Archibald, General Store keeper at Moncton; T. Foot, Ac- countant.

Mr. Luttrell has been retired with six mouths’ salary. A. McNab, late resident engineer, has had his salary reduced from $4000 to $2200, and is offered a pusition elsewhere.

Several of the late divisional superintend- ents will be offered positions elsewhere.

The Preinier and Hon. Dr. Tupper gave dinners on Saturday night to some of their political friends.

A gentleman supposed to be in tha confi- (dence of the Ministers says that ene of the fundamental principles of the new tariff will be the allowing of a drawback to manu- facturers for all duties paid on articles used by them.

TASHKEND, Feb. 19.

The Afghan Embassy, accompanied by General Rasgonoff, arrived at Samarcand at noon of Monday, and was received with greal ceremony.

The Afghan Ambassadors Were present last night at a ball, given by the Governor of Samarcand, and leave to-day for Tash- kend, in carriages, with post horses and a suite of 25 on horseback.

Gen. Kauffmann has received instructions to decline all propositions from the Afghan Ambassadors, the exact nature of whese mission is not yet known here.

Troops Already at ths Capa.

The following is the composition of the Eng- lish forces in South Africa: 3rd, 4th, 13th. 24th (both battalions), 80th, 88th, 90th and 99th regiments, in all nine battalions, or 7,500 officers aud men. In these forces in the ranks there are 4,518 Englishmen, 385 Irishmen and 301 Scotchmen. The Connaught Rangers, of course, contain a large Irish element, 75 as against 94 English and 3 Scotch. In the Buffs there are 227 Irish, 589 English and 19 Scotch; in the 4th, 262 Irish, 597 English, and 11 Scotch; in the 13th, 291 Irish, 435 English and 23 Scotch; in the two battalions of the 24th, 319 Irish, 355 English, and 23 Scotch; in the 80th, 117 Irish, 723 English and 16 Scotch; in the 90th, 295 Irish, 346 English and 174 Scotch; and inthe 99th. 149 Irish, 377 Eng- lish and 23 Scotch. In these various regt- ments 48 of the officers were Irish and 178 English.

Liverpool, Feb. 4—Judgment was given yes- terday in the Board of Trade inquiry at Liver-

ool into the abandonment of the barque Jas.

. Myrick, of Charlottetown, P. E. L, 500 miles off Queenstown, on the Ist of January. The Commissioner said the Court felt bound to believe the evidence of the crew in prefer- ence tothatof the captain and mate. The abandonment was wholly unjustifiable and the ‘captain and mate had been guilty of grave | misconduct. There was no doubt that the ‘captain caused the hatches to be broken open ‘and holes cut in the deck, with what object he ‘himself knew. If it had been distinctly proved ithat the captain had wilfully cast away the ' vessel for his own benefit or that ot the own- ers, the .Court would have cancelled his cer- ‘tificate; but as they believed it more likely ‘that he abandoned her from fear lest she | might be wrecked by ne too near the land, they would only suspend his certificate ‘for 12 months. The certificate of the mate is

| suspended for 6 months.
