Perbaps the fondness of certain actors today for the center cf the stage isa survival from the time when no other position was adequately lighted. In the early days of this century, before the introduction of gas, the footlights con- sisted of half a dozen or more vil lamps, and the point where their rays converg- ed was very properly known as the ‘*fo- cus.’’ Here all important passages of the piece bad to be delivered, since else- where the accom panyjng play of feature was not assuredly visible. It is told that when one of Kean’s admirers com- plimented him at supper after a per- formance of ‘‘Othello,’’ saying that in the great scene with Iago he almost thought the tragedian would strangle the villain, Kean answered: ‘‘Confound the fellow.
