Cycles, The Graphic Art of Robert Davidson, an exhibition which trans- forms the old traditions of Indian art from the coastal villages of British Columbia into a new medium, is currently on View at Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum in Charlottetown.

Robert Davidson is des- cribed by Peter MacNair of the B.C. provincial museum as "without ques- tion, the greatest of the young Haida carvers to emerge in recent years". Davidson based his work in the principles of style which enable an artist to go beyond the past, rather than merely trying . to copy the artistic level of northwest coastal Indians. *

Davidson describes the journeyman phase as " interpreting the song".

with the animal arch— etypes familiar to us from the totempoles, the symbolic stock in trade of the culture: eagle, raven, bear, killer whale, frog, beaver, thunderbird.

In his "master": prints, Davidson ranges further afield, rearranging trad— itional designs to fit net: shapes, eliminating super— flous detail and creating bold new ideas.

The seven "artist"prints are experimental and tent- ative, inventing entirely new forms. The images I If suggest his future direct- ion— pure imagination grounded on precise tradition, bring Haida art alive again.
