I have just come from the most fabulous. literally the most is- bulous flower show that has pro- bably ever been staged. After months of preparation in honor of Mother's Day, Macy's depart- ment store has completed a dis- play of “more than two and a half million specimen blooms gath- ered throughout the world. This flower show covers over 100,000 square feet and has transformed both the outside of the store and the entire first floor and _three other floors into a. gigantic bot- anical garden.
This exhibit does not inspire the warmth and delight that come from gazing at a simple lovingly tended. Island garden. Here one can only view the great interest flowers outside of ones experience, and shake ones head in wonder at this enormous scale of the

to improve the social and cultural life of a community.
Schools continue to receive the attention of Institute branches. The amount of $17,209.00 was spent on school improvement during the past year. Some of this was di- rected toward the improvement ‘of educational facilities rather than on school buildings.
Also, during the past year there was an increased interest in Health and Welfare activities. Generous contributions were made to Provincial Health and Welfare organizations, to local Hospitals and Orphanages. The work of the Dental Clinic was actively sup- Contlnued on page ll

A Fabulous Flower Show

Each window is fill- ed with hundreds of blooms of every color and size, typical oi one of the six countries: England. France, Holland, Italy, Siam and Hawaii. A life-sire pspier mache figure of a native flower seller. adds A dramatic touch. The Eng- lish flower window for example shows an elderly English woman in high buttoned boots and a shawl_ presiding over the old-fashioned garden flowers: snap-dragon, cos- mos. roses. mums gladiolo, lilies of the valley etc. The Holland win- dow of course features tulips in a bewildering variety with a pretty Dutch flower seller. France is re- presented by innumerable roses; Italy by orange and lemon trees and Hawaii by orchids of known and unknown varieties, and the window devoted to slam, holds fantastic tropical blooms.
As you enter the store you are greeted by the realistic recordings of bird songs, familiar and rare. Canaries in hundreds of white cages add their Lrilllng notes.
To this musical accompaniment you look around in a daze. Is that lovely Hawaiian girl sitting calmly in s. native hut of rushes and bam- boo and weaving a lei or welcome gsrland oi flowers, actually real? she is and so are the great lush blossoms that look like troplcar birds and fish, and huge lobster claws, and the gigantic tree ferns that swsy around the hut.

When you tear yourself away from this exhibit, you don't know where to let your eyes rest. There are two million blooms (I was told) massed in an incredible mosaic of color. Ten floral arches of hy- drangeas (in red, pink, blue and white) are above the central aisle. There are roses. snap dragons, lilacs, plox, and narcissus Arrang- ed by noted decorators. There are anions in every color as well as white. one,_ part plnky white, and part deep rose, is called "The Queen llllsabeth Alvsiea.
There are use blooms. such as Birds of Paradise (that they re- semble), Heart-shaped Anthuriums, Torch Ginger, 'mberous Begonias, Japanwe Tree Peonies, some in yel- low and gold shades—snd many others. ~
This is only A beginning. An- other floor is the Orchid Room. More than 8000 orchids, in differ- ent colors against a setting of native bamboo, are shown; some no larger than a finger tip; some the corsage use. Thousands were flown from Honolulu.

The death of Mrs. Sarah Isabel- la Pursey, widow of the late John P. Pursey occurred at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mlllar on-, New Olaqow, in the early morning hours of May 3 in her Nth year.
During her illness she was most patient. always looking on the brighter aide of life, and resting in the promise of a risen Lord. Thovestsem in which she was held was shown by the many floral tributes in-om the family, relatives and friends.
She was A lifelong membe of the Ikasbyterisn Church. Mrs. Pursey was the daughter of the late John Maccallum and his wife. the former Annie Morrow.
Those of the family left to char- ish her memory are: Lottie (Mrs. Horace Abbott, California); Ruby (Mrs. Vernon Riggs, Hamilton, Ont.); Mrs. Minnie Fraser, Char- lottetown and Harry, Quincy. Mass; Ids. (Mrs. Miller Orr, New Glas- gow). Two daughters predeceased her, also one son. Her husband passed away seven years ago.
Revf Donald Nicholson conduct- ed the service ssaisted by Rev. Mr, Blaikie and Rev. Mr. Sawdon. The old familiar hymns, My Shepherd", and “Rock of Ages" were sung by the choir, also “Face To Face" was flttingly ren- dered by Miss Doris Andrew.
Pall bearers were Messrs. Ben Woolner, Arch. Hartling, Willard Nicholson. Weston Rollings, John Doyle and Blair Andrew. '
There as the shadows of evening were gathering around, all that was mortal of a kind and loving mother was tenderly laid to rest in the family plot in Cavendish Cemetery.
