was not able to open out the contemplated roads. CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

Hon. Mr. Davies moved the second reading of the Bill relating to the Church of England. The motion passed and the Bill was read a second time, and the House resolved itself into a Commtttee of the Whole.

Mr. Catuoun in the Chair.

Hox. Mr. Suiiivan said he had received a vote from a member of the Church of England, intimating that the branch to which he belonged had never been consuit- ed about the Bill.

How. Mr. Davies said he understood that the Bill had been prepared by a Com- mittee of the Diocesan Church Scotety rep- presenting all sections of the Church.

Hon. Mr. SuLtivan suggested that the Conmnittee report progress and ask leave to sit again, so that if members of the Church of England are opposed to the Bill, their objections may be heard. Suggestion adopted.

PUBLIC PRINTING.

Mr. CaLtHoun moved that a Committee of five be appointed to enquire into the cost vf printing during the past ten years.

the English Church.

The bill was reported agreed to in com- mittee, and ordered to be engrossed and yead a third time.

Mr. Ferevson said that the Government gave this bill more advantages than the the bill which he introduced for the benefit of a laboring class. He thought it was of a private nature.

The leader of the Government explained that the bill had been obnoxious on the Statute Book, and that the Government determined to remove it, and it was not customary to repeal Acts at the expense of the ies whom they benefit.

e first order of the day was then read, and a Bill respecting the appropriation of fines collected by the Stipendiary Magis

trate. This Bill enacts that the fines collected by the Stipendiary Magistrate, for juvenile iminai otfenders, be paid into the Trea- sury of the City, instead of the Local Trea- ury, as enacted by the Dominion Statute, which comes in force on the first day of April next. : wt was agreed to in Committee, and order- «d@ to be engrossed and read a third time. The House then adjourned until three o’cleck.

Entertainment at Souris.

[COMMUNICATED. |

A uvsicat, literary and dramatic enter- teinment was given at Souris on Wednesday evening last, by the Temperance Reform Chib of that place. It was rather of a anixed character, intended to suit the tastes

all; in that it succeeded. ‘‘Who'll buy onhee Herrin?’ was very prettily sung. Mr. Cantwell brought down the house with his song, ‘‘The Taglishwan, the Scotch- man, and the Irishman,” and, in response to ‘an encore, sang ‘“‘The Cave Wheat

Sprouts,” which, with its quotations from Shakspere, was quite a novelty.

In the farce, ‘‘The Fellow That Looks Like Me,” Mr. Anderson deserves special mention, his interpretation of negro char- acter being capital.

In the last piece several local hits were well received. The other pieces were fairly rendered.

Altogether the Club have reason to be

ud of so much talent. These entertain- ments are well attended, and tend to cheer up the winter evenings, and also, we hope, to fill the Club’s treasury. The following

St. Patrick’s Day in Ottawa.

St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated in Ot- tawabya grand procession—the grandest scene in that city for a longtime. In the evening a concert was held in the Canadian Institute, and the building was crowded to its tullestcapacity. Mr. P. Baskervile, Presi- dent of the St. Patrick’s Society, occupied the chair, and on the platf rm were Right Hon. Sir John Macdonald,Senators Carrall, Howlan, Skead, and Girard, Messrs. Costi- ‘gan, M. P., Plumb, M. P., (Cariboo) J. M. Currier, M. P., Alonzo Wright, M. P., Macdonald, M. P., (Cape Breton) Hon. John O'Connor, Shenff Powell, D. J. O'Donoghue, M. P. P, D. O'Connor, Fa-} ther O’Uonnor, Vicar-General Jouvent, C. | % H. Mackintosh, Ald. Chavot, and several others.

After speeches from several of the gentle- men above mentioned, Senator Howlan made his appearance amid loud cheering. He said he was glad to see that freland was not forgotten in Ottawa. Many pleasant i, memories were awakened by the day. It Aer was pleasant amongst all the turmoil to have a ee one day which they could fairly call their Ae ey own. He was glad to see that their fellow countrymen were not behind in the celebra- tion. (Cheers.) He complimented them on the appearance of the procession.
