Skinner And Reed Hold Spotlight At Golf Tournament

ANDREWS, N.B., July b - (OP) — Archie Skinner, profes- sional of the host Algonquin Club, and Walter Reed Jr., free-swinging amateur from Fort Fairfield, Me.. still held the spotlight at the end of the second round of the 16th annual 54-hole New Brunswick- Prince Edward Island golf champ- ionships here today.

Skinner, two-tme winner of the pro title, carded a one-under-par 70 to add to his brilliant 68 on opening day for a 36-hole total of 138. That gave him a comfortable IS-stroke lead over Oliver (Boots) Baird, New Glasgow, NS, hockey star, who slipped badly and fired an 80, nine strokes over his first day total.

Reed, shooting for his third am- ateur title, fired a '74 for a 143 to- tsl, five strokes back of Skinner in the open division and three bet- ter than long-hitting John Steele of Riverside, N.B., runner-up in the amateur ranks. Steele checked in with a 70 to tie up Skinner for the best score of the day in the field of 119 amateurs and 12 pro- fessionals.

Bill Beer of Charlottetown, run- ner-up to Reed yesterday. slipped back to third piacc with a 7B for a 149 total. lric wont out in 40 and came home in 38 on the 6,314- yards course.

Three strokes back of Beer was Pete Kelly of Fredericton, former National Hockey League star, who had a 75 today.

Third place in the professional ranks is hcld bv Ray (Silver) Marshall of NcwGlasgmv. Quebec Aces hockey player. His T6 today gave him a 155 total, four strokes more than Baird.

Cecil Dowling of Charlottetown, ‘last year's amateur and open champ, moved to fifth spot by shooting an improved 77 for a 161 total.

In the second division amateurs. Frank Purton of St. Andrew's had a 159 total for a three-stroke lead over Jack Wiilmott of Moncion.

Jack Wade of Riverside, N. B., had an 84 to pull into a first-place tie with Elwood Grccnotigh of St. Croix, N.B., in thc third division. Each has a 170 total.

E. F. Clowes of Aroostook Val- ley, Mo, now has a 176 total for l six-stroke lcad over Gerald Lawson of Si. Andrew's, in the fourth division.

Thirteen strokes back of Reed was Maurice (Mousie) Dowling of Charlottetown who had an ace yesterday. The Sydney Millionair- es forward rratchcd his opening round 7R for a 156 total.

Charles Signs To Defend Title Against Lesnevich

NEW YORK, July 5 - (AP) - Euard Charles, nenrly-rzwuvned Na. tlonal Boxing Association heavy- Wflfiht champion. today signed to defend his title against Gus Lesne- vich, former world light-heavy- weight champion. in a 15-round match at Yankee Stadium, Wednes- day. Aug. 10.

Charles won the N. B. A. crown less than two weeks ago \vhen he outpointed Jersey Joe Walcott in a LS-round bout in Chicago June 22.

The New York State Athletic Commission did not recognize Charles as champion. Eddie Eagan, chairman of the commission. is on record as saying lie prefers a “t.ournament" to decide the succes- so: to the retired Joe Louis.

Eagan could not be reached im- mediately for comment, as to whe- ther he will recognize the Charles- Lesnevich tilt as a championship fight.

The 77th annual prize meeting of the Prince Edward Island Rifle Association commences this morn. ing at the Squaw Point Range near Tea Hill at eight. o'clock,

Up\vards of $1,000 irfltrophles and cash prizes will be distributed, and it is expected that 60 or more rifle- men will take part.

The first match fired today will be the DeBlois Bros. Ltd., which will be 10 rounds at the 200-yard range. and following that will be the Prowse Bros. Ltd. match of 10 rounds at 300 yards.

In the afternoon, the Moore and McLeod Ltd., match of 10 rounds at 500 yards and the Cameron-Vinni- combe match consisting of 10 rounds at the 600 yard range, will be shot. The matches will continue on Thursday and Friday.

Percy Paris Wins Split Decision From Tony Riccio

HALIFAX, July 5-(CP)—Percy Paris, New Glasgow, N. S., negro, smashed out a split decision to- night over Tony Riccio of Boston in a 10-round bout at the Halifax Arena. Paris weighed 135, Riccio 132%.

Iliccio, who had beaten Paris every time in their three previous engagements, found his opponent an elusive target after the first round. Working a fast one-two. Paris was repeatedly in and out before Riccio could counter with his looping right hand. Paris had Ricclo in trouble in the last round after he landed a bolo punch to the head, but Riccio managed to stay out 6f his way till the end.

Riccio exhibited a swollen ‘right hand after the bout and his man- ager, Lem Moore, said he thought the thumb might be fractured.

Ossie Farrell, 104, of Halifax, won a split decision over Al Bar- bosa, 15B, of Boston, in the six- round semi-final.

Abbies To llave Strong Track And Field Team

The Abegweit track and field team which will participate in many track and field events throughout the summer season will be one of the strongest beams ever to represent the Island in track history. With the addition of coi- lese stars from other centres throughout the Province, the team now stands as a definite threat to all track and field clubs in the Maritlmes. _ '

For the running events the team will have Bolb Manning, Maritime intercollegiate 220 record holder, Dave Boswell. 440 and 880 spefidster, Gordie Kerr, Windy Le- Page, lbeecond 100 main. Johnny Cash, 100 yarder, and Jack Brown, 100 yarder. It is in the field events that the locals are in a needy posi- tion as they have only George Wal- ters, who holds many field records. Ernie Matheson, and a newcomer, Jack Pearse. Missing from this year's team will be Bill Brawler. who was one of the best jumpers ever to appear on the Island. It was not known if the team will have any long distance runners on their roster but it is likely that they will have at least two or three.

Most of the above together with numerous juniors are getting in daily practices and reports have it that they are rapidly getting lrrto their best shape.

The second section of the Island Baseball League schedule will get underway here this evening at 5:15 when the Charlottetown AI)- bies clash with the Summerside R. C, A. F. nine at the Memorial Field diamond.

The game was originally sched- uled to be played at Summerside, but Abbie officials announced last night that satisfactory arrange- ments have been made with Sum- merslde to hold the encounter here instead. and that the junior game between the Knights of Columbus and the Victorlas which was to be played here tonight, has been post- poned until a later date.

Although it was not learned who the starting hurlers will be for the encounter, both teams will no doubt be using some of their key pitch- ers. and as both squads have had some really nip-and-tuck battles against one another in previous games this season, tonight's battle should prove to be a smart en- counter with plenty of good ball and fast action all the WHY-

Four Golf’ Meets Within Next Month

ST. ANDREWS, N.S., July 5 — (OP) - James Foster, secretary- treasurer of the New Brunswick- Prlnce Edward Island Golf Assoc- iation, announced here tonight that the association would spon- sor four golf meets within the next month.

The announcement followed a meeting of the association's dir- ectors, presided over by President G.J. Campbell.

Westfield. N.B., Golf and Coun- try Club will be the site of the 36- hole N.B.-P.E.I. junior tournament July 7. The winner will advance to the Canadian junior champion- to be played at the Riverside, N.B., course July 28.

Some 30 juniors are expected to compete for the‘ title won last year by Bill Thomson of Bermuda. Thomson, a student at Rothesay. N.B,, Collegiate, will not defend his crown.

The mixed two-ball foursome, won last year by Mr. and Mrs. CL. Urquhart of Riverside at Moncton, N.B., will be held at Fredericton lug. 11.

Dates have not been decided for the Maritife amateur, won last year by Nipper Ross of Sydney. NS, at Amherst, NS. It will be held at Moncton late in August along with the Maritime open.

ST. ANDREWS, N.B,, July I — (OP) — Frank N. Robertson of Saint John, NB. was elected pres- ldent of the New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island Golf Association at its annual meeting here tonight. He succeeds Grant J. Campbell of St. Croix, N.B.

Mr. Robertson was the associa- tion's vice-president and a former president of the Royal Canadian Golf Association.

Dr. J.W. Sears of Fredericton was liar-ed vice-president and James F. "aster of Saint John was re- elected secretary-treasurer.

The association reported that the dollar-a-year plan adopted 1B5! Yelr was a huge success.
