At latest accounts, sixteen children were in a critical condition, some of whom it was thought would die. first cargo, shipped on May 5th, consisted of 36 head fat cattle, 40 sheep, 1100 bush. potatoes, 65 tons pressed hay, and some eggs, all of the value of $2,264. T he second eargo consisted of 34 head of fat cattle, 1002 bush. potatoes, 11380 bush. oats, 15 cases eggs, all together valued at $2,543. The cattle were a nice lot, not quite so heavy as last year, but fairly well finished. The annual School meeting wag held on fuesday, the 17th inst. H L MeDonald Exq., being the retiring Trastee, Mr. F D M.Cormack was elected in his place. The Board of Trustees consists of DC Morson, Chairman; Wm. P Lewis and F D Mc- Cormack, with L Parker as Secretary. The usual supplements were voted and other business transacted. The grounds around the school have been fenced and some flower beds and ornamental trees planted, and other improvements made. This district has now good school accom- modation ; but it has only been obtained by a considerabl outlay and heavy taxation. It is to be hoped thatthe present board will be easier on the people than the last one.

Capt. A. Matheson may be counted as one of the successful Islanders abroad, as he is commander of the ss. Estrabo, one of Lambert & Holt’s line of steamships. This company own sixty steamships, and have the contract for carrying the Belgian.mails to South America, the Estrabo being one of the mail boats. Capt. Matheson is the son of Mr. D. Matheson, of St. Peter's Road, Lot 53, near Cardigan, and is now on a visit to his friends—the first he has paid the Island for fifteen years. His career hag been a most interesting and ex- citing one. Without money or triends, he worked his way upwards until now he holds a splendid position as first rank commander in this large line of steamers, a line that is reckoned one of the first out of Liverpool, G. B. We do not remember any of our Sea-captains that have held as good a pos- ition as Oapt. Murchison now holds, with the exception of those in the Royal Navy. May success attend him,

Mr. Healey Balderston, A. B., son of the Hon. John Balderston, North Wiltshire, has been engaged through the Rev. D. D. Moore, A. M., B. D., asa missionary teacher for the Singapore Academy, East Indies. This insti- tution is one of the largest and best equipped of any in Eastern Asia,.and is under the charge of the Rev. Mr. Oldham, Superintend- ent of Missions at Singapore. Mr. Balderston will probably be leaving for his distant field of labor, in company with Mr. Moore, early next month.
