Stock Averages Said Misleading

BOSTON (AP)—Lawyer Sam ue! B. Levine has described the Dow Jones stock averages as ‘misleading and unfair’ and said they are a means for en ticing the public to invest tn stocks

Levine testified at a public hearing on a bill calling for an investigation of the effect of publication of the average on ‘the economic status of the in vestors of the Commonweaith.’

The Boston lawyer told the committee that if any of its members had invested in stocks “Il hope you haven't followed the trend of the Dow Jones aver ages.”

He said the average is arrived at by a formula involving only about 30 of the 1,500 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange

The average, he said, “is a fraud on the public and should be abolished.”
