Lonsters.—This precious fish is being taken in great numbers all around the coast of western l’rince County. The size is larger than usual. A good season’s work is now almost assured, as prices are away up.

The dele- gates from outside districts wil! be entertained at a banquet to be held at St. Dunstan’s Hall or at one of the leading hotels, in the event of the Scott Act troubles being settled.

BapLty DaMAGED.—An exchange says: An outward bound steamer, believed to be the Cacouna, from Quebec, ran into and badly damaged the tug steamer McNaughton on Thursday night last. The latter was coming up the St. Lawrence at the time. She had a narrow escape from going down with all hands.

THe Motros Dismissep.—In the suit for libel of the Toronto Mail against the Empire, judgment was given on Saturday, dismissing the motion made at the last session of the assize court by the solicitors for the prosecu- tion that the defendants’ plea of justific:tion be struck out. The Empire was charged by the Mai with libel in accusing them of treason and traitorous conspiracies, etc.

Lanp Sate.—At the sale of the Warburton lots, at the new park to-day, by Messrs. E. H. Norton * Co., the following gentlemen were purchasers: F. W. Hyndman, $125; James Vatcher, $215; ©. B. McNeill, $110; H. Haszard, $100; E. H. Norton & Co., $221. The lots were very desirable. The terms of sale were 25 per cent. down and the balance to remain at 4 per cent. interest, payable either in five years or in annual instalments. There are still a number of very handsome lots unsold. The same firm will sell the brick residence of Mr. George Macleod to- morrow at 12 o'clock.

JAPAN. —We have received from Rev. Benj. Chappell, now of Tokyo, Japan, a neatly printed copy of the Tokyo, Ei-wa Gakko Cal- endar, 1590. It contains illustrations of the Goucher Hall, the Philander Smith Biblical Institute and grounds, together with an his- torival statejient and general regulations of the iustitutions. Inthe list of faculty we find a number of Canadians, amongst whom are Prof. J. W. Wadman and Rev. Benj. Chappelle, of P. E. Island. The names of the Japanese teachers are most difficult to pronounce, but the number is legion. It seems tnat education in the far East is now receiving the greatest attention, and the christianing of Japan in the very near future is assured.

Settinc Decayep Burrer.—Yesterday a littie girl was sent to the market for some butter by her mother. She made the purchase from a coyntry-woman, but when she brought the butter home her mother was not long in making the discovery that it was not so sound as it had once been—-that the smell from it was not at all what it should be. She at once sent the child back with the butter, with instructions to have her money returned, but before the little one reached the market the woman had _ taken her departure. Her husband, however, was interviewed, but he declined to refund the money claiming that there was nothing wrong with the butter—that he had used some of it himself not long before. This business of selling decayed butter should be put a stop to at once.

Pouce, Court.—This morning Henry McEwen, charged with the larceny uf $40 from Captain Peter DeCoste, of theschoon- er Soudan, confessed, and was given twelve months imprisonment. It appears that McEwen eutered the cabin of the schooner which is loading cattie for St. Johns, Nfld, at Queen’s wharf, yesterday afternoon, while the captain was busy stleading to the shipping of the cattle, and ‘ppropriated 4 cash box therefrom con- taining the amount above stated. After taking out the money McEwen threw the box over the wharf. The box was missed some time later, and the fact was made known to Marshal* Cameron, who traced the theft to McEwen, and had him ar- rested at the Lyceum after the perfor- mince last nivht. Tois morning, seeing that the Marshal had worked up a strong Ca'e against him, he coufessed his guilt, 4nd was disposed of in the manner above sated. The Behring Sea Fisheries.

Wasatneton, May 20. The Behring Sea fisheries was considered at to-day’s Cabinet meeting. It was decid- ed, it is understood, to advert the policy of last season which is practically the same as the position taken by the last and previous administrations.

Silk Mills Closed.

Auburn, N. Y., May 20. The Logan Silk Mills were closed to- night by the Sheriff on judgments aggregat- ing $17,000. About 500 hands are thrown out of employment. The failure is attribut- ed to the unsettled condition of the silk narket due to tariff legislation.

Committed Fer Trial. Havirax, N. S., May 20. Daniel Robertson has been committed for trial at Westville, for murdering Wil- liam Robertson. The murderer is 30 years of age. Both the murderer and his victim were to have been married within a week. Both were drunk.

Tests for purity, sulphur, etc., are reguiarly and fre- quently made in nearly al! the places in the districts. We commend this report to students of parliamentary reports and blue books.
