A Peculiar Custom.

In the time of King Edward at great banquetsit was the custom of the Anglo-Saxons to pass around a large cup, from which each guest drank. Who thus drank stood up, and, as he lifted up the cup with both bands, his body

To pre- vent this the following plan was adopt- ed: When one ofthe company stood up to drink he required the companion who sat next to him to be his pledge— thai is, to be responsibie for protecting him against anybody who should = at- tempt to take advantage of his defence- loss position. Thi- companion stood up also, and raised his drawn sword in his hand to deiend the drinker while drink- ing. This prectice, is a somewhat altered form, continued long after the condition of society had ceased to re- quire it,and was the origin of the modern practice of pledging by drink- ne.
