AN EXPLOSION.

A Blacksmith’s Narrow Hscape from Death.

Tats MouNING between 11 and 12 o'clock an explosion occurred in the’ blacksmith’s shop of Mr. Geerge Foster, Upper Queen Street, by which Mr. Frederick Fuster had # miraculous escape from death. The facts of the case, as far as we can learn, are: A few days ago Mr. Foster purchased a barrel of brass cartridges, which he intended to melt to a solid body of brass. The cart- ridges coni-ined powder, more or less, and were, until yesterday, kept in the yard out- side the forge. Yesterday Mr. Foster was attaching tires to wheels in the yard, and, fearing tho cartridges would take fire, placed them inside the forge. This morn. ing the blacksmiths did not remove the borvel to the yard, but commenced work without thought of the evil which followed. Mr. Arthuc Foster and his brother Fred- erick were working in the forge together at the time above mentioned. The former went into the carriage shep of Messrs. Younker & Offer. He had not been away ever two minates when he heard a sound asiof heavy cannon in his father’s yard. He returned! quickly, and, as he entered the yard, heart his brether cal! to him distress- ingly, and, in an insiant, saw him rush out of the dark smoke which enveloped the forge. He was badly burned about the face, neck, and arms, and his legs were severely injured. Surgical aid was im- mediately obtained, and after the young man revived ‘he detailed the facts of the explosion which are in substance: minutes after lis brother left the shop a spark from his anvil ignited the powder in the barrel of cartridges.
