We have received pa- pers from London to the 18th, and from Liverpool to the 19th ultimo.— The news by this arrival, is of little importance, even to the most anxious inquirer; but we have gleaned many extracts which, we trust, will be new to the/'most of our readers. Who would have thought two months ago, that the Sovereign of the British empire would quietlv and peaceably leave the shores of England, ‘for those ofa foreign and ancient foe? Happy and content is that soyereign who wins the hearts of the people ; and great indeed is that people who can rejoice in the affections ofa virtuous monarch.

One ofthe moat pleasing as well as remarkable events ofthe age, is the visit which the young and lovely Queen of England, accompanied by her consort, has just been paying to the King of the French, followed by a round of graceful and elegant hos- pitalities, in which the royal families of both countries,their courtiers, and their ministers have joined. Those great drawbacks from the personal comfort of sovereigns,the ostentation, the acting, which their high social position would seem to demand did not ﬁnd their way to the Chateau D’Eu,’where all the parties assem- bled were seen iii the natural charac- ters, and where the Crowned Heads more especially appeared divested of all the formality appertaining to roy- alty. A more happy or a more convi- vivial party, from all the accounts which have transpired respecting it could not exist. The high moral cha- racter of both Sovereigns,so far from clogging the liveliness of the scene. imparted to it additional exuberance and gaiety. As a mere personal in’ terchange of civilities, and drawing closer in the bonds of amity the re- presentatives of the most powerful and civilized monarchies in the \an‘ld, the visit i an excellent guarantee for the continuance of friendly relations between their respective subjects — Upon the people themselves, especi- ally the French, it can hardly fail to have a beneﬁcial inﬂuence. The anti-English feeling has been on the increase in France,but nothing could be devised for arresting it so eti‘ect- ually as this royal visit. The Parisi— ans seem annoyed that the Queen did not go to the metropolis, and, all things considered it is to be regretted that she did not, as her reception would have been ﬂattering, and the visit would, then have become more national.

SOUTH “'ALES.

The Rebeccaites in Wales still con- tinue their outrages,and set both the military. and civil power at deﬁance. Bugles were momentarily heard from mountain to mountain, and rockets and guns were constantly being dis- charged. A battle was fought be- tween the Police and Rebeccaites in the town of Llanon.

He is now at the' inﬁrmary of the House of Corrcco 'tion. We understand his name is Hughes, and that he is a resident of the village of Llanon in Carmarthen- shire. The name ofthe other wound- ed man is Jones : he received some slugs in the back, and three sword cuts in the head. He is in a very precarious state.

IRELAND.

The Repeal agitation has crossed the channel this wet-k with very in- different success. Ilaving accepted an invitation from the liepealers of liiverpool,Mr. Daniel O’Connell.jun., and a bevy of the Corn Exchange hangers on, arrived here on Tuesday, and in the evening proceeded to the Ampliitheatre,where the meeting was announced to take place. Mr. O’Connell’s son having addressed the assemblage,a general row took place. A party of Orangemen, armed with bludgeons,gained access to the meet- ing, and acting simultaneously, they rushed at a given signal upon the Re- pealers, whom they belaboured lusti- ly with their weapons. The party assailed, stunned for a nioment,turn- ed upon their opponents,nnd for near- ly half an hour the lower part of the circus presented a scene of the most brutalizing character. Broken heads and limbs, and faces,in which scarce- ly a lineament of the human counte- nance was visible. The assailed and assailers were Mr. O’Connell's coun- trymen—a striking proof of the una- nimity which prevails amongst Irish. men on the subject of the Repeal of the Union.

The controversy raised by her Ma- jesty’s visit to France, seems to have exhausted isself, while it has puzzled every one on both sides of the water.

The non-arrival of the Overland Mail, which is now more than a fort- night beyond its time, has excited some uneasiness. The delay. has oc- curred on the other side of Suez.— The belief at present is, that the steamer has been beaten back by the monsoon. .

Last Thursday week the Queen sail Prince Alhert,sccompsaied by the Prince de Joinville. emlitrked on board the roy- al yacht nt'l‘report,on their return to Eng. land, after nearly a week’s residence at the Chateau d'Eu. The royal yacht. escorted by the Plutnn, Archiniede, and Napoleon war steamers, and a British sipiadron of ships of war, arrived at Brighton on the some day, after a passage of little tnore than six hours. Her Ma- jesty and the Prince remained at Brigh- ton till the tollowing'I‘ues'daiy, when they re-einharlted,wit'h the intention ofpaying a visit to the King of the Belgians at Ostend. Having passed the night oli‘ Welmer Castle (the residence of the Duke of Wellington as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports), the royal squadron stood out to sea early the next morning; and the illustrious voyagers, after a rough passage arrived in good health and spirits at Ostend where King Leo. pold, accompanied by his Queen, awaited their arrival. The royal party is to vi- sit Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, and other famous cities of the Netherlands, all equally rich in historical recollections; and is not expected to return to England till towards the end of the present week. The new government of Spain is busily engaged in a conﬂict with the discordant elements which called it into being. Barcelona isin arms,and the expulsion of Espartero is likely to he succeeded by a sanguinary civil war. The Fort of Monjnich has been ﬁring upon the Atarazanas. As the army cannot be depended upon, mea- sures of extreme severity have been adopted to awe it into subjection.— A battalion of the 3rd regiment si Barcelona mutined a few days ago; numbering about 500 ' men, it was feared that the example might be con- tagious. Narvaez promised, if they laid donn their arms, they should have what they wanted; they did so, and a number were immediately pla- ced under arrest; priests were intro- duced to them, and,, soon after, ﬁve serjeants, two corporals, and a pri- vate were led out, and shot within sight of the barracks.
