A STATEMENT OF THE RESULTS OF THE POULTRY FATTENING STATIONS CONDUCTED BY PROF. J. W. ROBERT- SON, DOMINION COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE AND DAIRYING,
A cupy of the evidence upon poultry fattening given by Professor Robertson before the Agricultural Committee of
‘the House of Commons is to hand.
It will be remembered that lots of chickens were fattened in the Maritime Provinces as follows: At Truro and Wolfville, N. S., Andover and Sussex, N. B., and at Chariettetown and Summerside, P. E. I. Referring to the work at these stations Professor Robertson in his evidence said : 1. The crates in which the fattenin
is carried on are six and a half (6%) feet long by sixteen (16) inches square, inside meaeurement. Each crate is divided into three compartments, and each compartment holds four or five chickens according to their size. The crates are made of slats running longwise on three sides and up and down in front. The slats may be from 1 inch to 1% inches wide by § inch thick. The spaces between the slats in front should be 2 inches wide to permit the chickens to get their heads through for feeding. ‘The slats on the bottom should be put on 34 ofan inch apart. Each compart ment has asma!l sliding door in front.
2. The crates are placed on stands
The droppings from the chickens in the cratesare received on sand or some absorbent material below.
3. Alight “V” trough, 2 inches in- side, is placed in front of each crate, running the whole length of it. The bottom of the trough is about level with the floor slats of the crate.
4. The birds of the larger breeds are best suited for fattening. Dorkings and Plymouth Rocks are good sorts,
also light Brahmas and Buff Cochins or crosses of these. The age may be any- where from three to four or even five months, and the condition of the bird siould be such as to indicate health- fulness and a tendency to fatien.
5. The feed may be oats, barley or wheat, preferably eats ground very fine, as fine as they can be pulverized, the seeds and hulls being kept in and also

6. The ground grain should be mixed with skim milk only. Theskim milk may be sweet or sour, preferably sour. The mixiure should have about the consistency of thin porridge; so thick that it will not run readily and so thin that if a large spoontul of it were put on a plate it wouid spread.
7. The chickens should be feed from the trough in front of the crates three times aday During the first three or tour days they shouid be fed quite sparingly, as much as _ they will eat up clean, thrice a day. They should be given water thrice a day and an allowance of grit twicea week. Ground oyster shells are suitable.

g. It is desirable to have the chick- ens fed in the crates from the troughs for about two weeks. They should be fed lightly for the first week, and after that, they may be fed as much as they will eat up clean, thrice aday. Then they may be fed by the cramming ma- chine. When itis used they should be fed twice a day only, and the teed-
| ing period with the cramming machine
should not be longer than two weeks.
10. During the last ten days of the fattening period a small portion of tallow should be used at the rate of one pound per day for about 90 or 100 chickens, according to size. That should be gradually increased until one pound per day is being fed to from 5° to70 chickens. Tue best way to mix the tallow is is to melt a_ portion of it, thicken it while still hot with ground meal, and then mix the right quantity of that paste with the other teed ior the day.
11. The cramming machine is a pail-like hopper, standing on three legs
about 4 1-2 feet high, with a small force pump at the botiom :eading to an opening, on which is placed a
rubber tube about ten inches long and
3-5 of an inch diameter inside. The rubber tube is about 3 1-2 feet, or the height of the feeders waist, from the 'yround. The feeder takes the bird by the legs and holds it against his his body, partly under the He then opens its beak wiih his lett hand and puts it over the rubber tube. The Jett hand carries the head for- ward, the neck of the bird being kept straight by drawing it slightly back by the right hand, which 1s around its body, with the fingers over its crop. The rubber tube being wetied with milk, readily slides into the bira’s,crop. By pushing the pedal with the foot, a sufficient vuaniity ot the feed is caused to pass into the crop. The pedal is let up, and all pressure of food into the crup is removed before the bird is pulled back. If that is not done, some of the food will be ex- uded into the throat and that might cause choking. The operation is quite simple and does not seem to be in any way harmful or even disa- greeable to the chickens.

as agreed by the agents. The chickens were spoiled and they were charged to the agents of the steamer, who, of course, agreed to pay for them.

} 2 shillings and 81% pence each.
Sold by James Ruddin, Liverpool : 106 chickens at 8 pence per pound.
The commissioner then went on to say:
On the whole it may be conciuded from our obseryationson the fattening that :
1. Chickens of the smaller breeds, such as White and Black Spanish, Minorcas, Andalusians and others of that sort, do not give as good returns in the fattening as chickens from the larger breeds, such as Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes, Brahmas, Indian Games, Dorkings and crosses of these.
2. Oats or other grain must be ground very fine, practically pulver- ized.
3. Asaruleit is not profitable to fatten for a longer period than four weeks.
4. The use of the cramming machine is not necessary, but by means of it the chickens show a larger gain in weight for the quantity of feed con- sumed during the last ten days of the fattening period than when fed al together from the trough.
5. All the directionsfor the guidance of feeders as given above should be carried out in every detail.
