behindhand in our maritime defences. Sir ‘Lh mas granted that we must measure our own strength by the strength of our neigh- bors, but he proceeded to show that we have no reason to shrink from the applica- tion of this test. In ironclads of the first class, we have fourteen ships, while the French have but three. To know what a first-class ironclad is like we must such monsters as the Devastation or the In- tlexible; latter carries four 80-ton guns, whilst the former is a mastless turret ship, carrying four guns of thirty-five tons which can fire shell or shot of 700 pounds each at 900 miles an hour. The Devastation also carries twelve torpedoes, and is armed with a reversible ram, so that her fighting powers may be said to extend as far below ihe surface as above it. Her engines will enable her to charge in one direction at the rate of sixteen miles an hour, and in two minutes to charge at the same speed inthe opposite direction. Electric lights and various other contriv- ances protect her against the subtle approach of foes in the dark. It is this and similar vessels, and gunboats bearing the suggestive names of Weazle, Pike, Snap, and Ant, that will go to form the squadron ordered to assemble at once at Portland under Admiral Sir G. P. Hornby, to prove to ourselves and the rest of the world that

much on armoured ships. Russia has only one first class ironclad, The Peter the Great. We have laid down eleven armoured ships in the time that the French have laid down four. But Sir Thomas Brassey went on to say that in second and third class ironclads also, our superiority is assured, whilst in uvarmoured ships it is conspicu- ous. We have sixty-two vessels of the latter kind, with a displacement of 173,- COO tons, against thirty-four vessels with a displacement of only 79,000 tons in the French navy. But Sir Thomas's state- ments were intended to prove that in the point of naval armament, not only are we im advance of other powers, but this Gov- ernment is in advance of the last. It has constructed faster sailing cruisers. It has energetically proceeded with the task of arm- ing the fleet with breech-loading guns. It increased the Parliamentary estimates for the purpose of ordnance from £300,000 a year—the annual appropriation for that purpose when it took oflice—to £700,000. which sum, during the present year, will be swelled to over two millions. immense guns of 110 tons each, and a lot of smaller ones are being constructed. The former will throw the ‘‘ Woolwich infant” quite into the shade. Their pro jectiles will be 16} inches in diameter, will weigh nearly two thousand pounds each, will require nine hundred pounds of gun- pouder to discharge them, will leave the muzzle of the gun at the rate of two thousand and fifty feet in a second, and will, at the distance of a thousand yards, penetrate armour nearly thirty inches thick. TY\HE above Stove I invented and patented in 1876, and at the present time HUN-

D&EDS ARE IN USE, giving perfect satisfaction, A large number have been in contant use for eight years, and the repairs have been very trifling, in many instances none have been required. This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of their durability, which is accounted for in the following :—It has, instead of a Lined Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense coonected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to renew Linings and Grates, at least once or twice every year, The heat being radiated from the Oylin- ders to the floor, where most needed, overcomes 4 ~ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Cooking Stoves. The Cylinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with equal satistaction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel. I have also attached ths PATENT TELESCOPI®S OVEN to all my Elevated Oven Wood Stoves, such as the Waterloo, Niagara, Stay &c , causing the thousands using them to exclaim— My Stoves are worth TEN DOLLARE MORE than the same kind made by other foundries.
