A correspondent sends to Nature the fol- lowing extract from a letter just received from his son, of the Indian Geological Sur- vey Department, wlio is at present engaged by the Maharajah of Cashmere, in explor- ing and reporting on his Sapphire Mines :

‘Some time ago there was a letter in Nature describing a method of protecting the eyes from sun-glare when crossing snow, by Diackening the nose aud cheek under the eyes. I tried the dedgs the other day when I was crossing the snowfields and giaciers from Quanskar and found it very successiul. My sbikari and some of the other natives were mach amused when I produced a piece of charcoal and proceeded to blacken my face, but they also tried it and said it relieved them very much. I don't know how the effect is pronced, but itis mach as when one went, off the snow into a patch of moraine or rock clear of snow. The blackening seems to stop the vetiected rays in some way. The natives expressed tne feeling by saying it cooled the face. | found it quite possible to walk over the snow for many miles without glasses, which araa nuisance, especially on rough ground, hut without the blackening I had to
