Mr. Gay had on sale at the market to- day a quantity of new potatoes which were crown in the garden of Henry Holl, Esq., of this city. They are of the Early Rose species and are of an average size of three by four inches. They were quickly retailed at the rate of eight cents per quart.

Cot. MeGint’s elaborate cake evidently did not go well with the intelligent people of Crapaud. Rumor says it was sold at the value which the electors of that district jlace on a Grit candidate. N. B.—We eas the price the cake realized was one dollar on the fifth bid of the seccn 1] oifer.

AT the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, Edward O'Neill was exam- ined for the larceny ef brass, copper, ete., from the forge of. Alexander Russel, on Duncan’s Wharf. After hearing the evi- dence of Mr. Russel, his son and the City Marsha!, the prisoner was remanded to jail for eight days. None of his companions havé yet been arrested.

Mr. W. S. Irvine, agent for John H. Murray’s Grand Circus, is at present in this city. He informs us that the Cireus will be exhibited in this city on the 18th and 19th inst., on a lot owned by Hon. J. Longworth at the corner of Fitzroy and Edward Streets. An enormous bill-board, 12 feet high by 200 feet long, is being erected for the plackards on Market Square

A prspatcH to the St. John papers of Satutday evening, from Montreal, says: ‘* The Mayor has issued a proclamation for- bidding people congregatimg on the streets on the Twelfth. The Orangemen will issue a notice this evening that they will walk, in defiance of the proclamation. A requisi- tion, signed by six magistrates, to call out the troops, has been presented to the miil- tary authorities. The excitement is rising to fever heat.”

Ir has hitherto been an almost universal practice in this City that, so soon as the death of an honored or well-known citizen is announced, half shutters are put upon the different stores as a token of respect for the deceased and of sympathy for the be- reaved. Such a custom may or may not be without any practical use, but we contend that it is stretching the thing a little too far to ‘‘put up shutters” upon learning of the death of a friend’s horse, as was done by one of the Grafton Street stores, yester- day, when news was received, by ‘‘ express messenger,” of the death of Mr. Richard Coady’s horse.

A Fatat Cask oF Swonstroxe.—Mr. Peter Martin, a man about sixty years old, who kept a grocery and liquor store in Upper Water street, opposite Pickford & Black’s wharf, died very suddenly on Thursday. He had been visiting friends at the head cf Si. Margaret’s Bay. On Thursday, while walking towards the house of a man who was going to drive him into town he was sunstrack and fell to the ground: in falling his forehead struck against a rock, which inflicted an ugly wound, He was found lyiug on the ground unconscious, and was carried to a neighbor- ing house. Medical assistance was pro- cured, but proved of no avail. The com- bined effects of sunstroke and the cut in his head caused his death in afew hours. His body was brought to town yesterday. —IZ». Supreme Covrr.--The casa of John E. Haszard vs. Robert N. Cox occupied the time of the Court until half-past one to- day, when the Jury retired, and after hay- ing been absent for an hour and a half re- turned to ask a question on a point of evi- dence, atter which they returned a verdict for the defendant. The case of the Crown ws. Mary Mills for perjury, was called on at two o'clock, and occupied about an hour. The witnesses in this case were mostly colored. They created considerable amuse- ment and provoked hearty roars of laugh ter from the Bench, jury and :pe>tators. At half-past four the jury returned a ver- dict of ‘‘not guilty.” For the prosecution the Attorney General and John Longworth, Q. C.; for the defense, E. J. Hodgson, Esq. The case of Chas. McKinnon +s. Hector McKinnon, an action of ejectment, was called on at half-past three, and is still

pending.

The Times’ Berlin correspondent tele- graphes, he learns that in St. Petersburg, and still more in Moscow, great indignation is felt at the results of the Congress. The Russian diplomists in general, and the Plenipotentiaries at Berlin, in particular, being spoken of with contempt. They do nothing, the people say, but make conces- sions, and are ready to accept any humili- ation to gain the approbation of Europe.

A télegram from Vienna says that Ba- toum is not to be made a free port after the fashion of Hamburg er Altona, but is to become a Russian free port, which is quite different.

Respecting Crete, the solution proposed by Congress is considered unacceptable at Athens, where public opinion is exasper- ated.

On Friday manifestations in which 15,000 persons participated, took place in front of the King’s palace. The Government are powerless to resist the current of popular feeling, and on Friday evening orders were issued for the transportation of the royal} guard to the frontier at Lamia.

Some of the Greeks in Berlin seem to have recevered from the profound dejection and strong animosity which the decision of Congress regarding the Helienic question at first produced, and the more cool headed among them begin to perceive that the best policy is to make the most of what has been obtained.

The Bank of Montreal discovered this morning that there are in circulation counterieit ten-dollar bills of the Bank of British North America. They are very finely photographed, requiring the know- ledge of an expert to detect their forgeries.
