SENECAL'S RASCALITIRS, AND CHAPLEAU’S INQUIRY.

Lister Floored Again

Orrawa, Sept. 26.

Before the Public Accounts Committee yesterday it was proved that immediately on the report of Senecal’s blackmailin Operations having reached Hon. Mr. Chap. leau last spring, he instituted a searching inquiry. Senecal, of course, denied the accusation. Not satisfied with this, Chap- leau instructed Chamberlain, the (Queen's printer, to make inquiries of firms who had dealingf with the Printing Bureau. One of those inquired of was Mr. Me- Elrvy, agent of the Potter Company, who gave au imphatic denial to the charges. Barber, of Barber & Ellis, said that the reason he never complained of Senecal was because he was sffraid he would get no more orders. Barber swore that McKen- zie Bowell had privately asked him last: April if it was true that Senecal had exact- ed commissions and being told that it was he said he would take steps to stop it. Mr. Bowell corroborated Barber’s evidence and said that at the next coumittee meeting he would narrate the steps he took. Mr. Chapleau voluntarily produced the evi- dence taken before the Court in Montreal, which Lister had stated would implicate Chapleau in a corrupt bargain. This evi- dence fully sustained Chapleau’s statement that he had written no letter and complete- ly exonerated him.

In the Senate yesterday ths address to Her Majesty on Canada’s trade relations, asking for the termination of the effect of certain most favored nation clauses was unanimously adopted.

In the House of Com nons Haggart pre- sented a statuto y dec aration by Senator McLaren declaring the charges preferred by Lister against Haggart to be absolutely untrue, and without the shadow of any foundation in fact. Very naturally Mr. Laurier objected to such declaratlon being read.

Sir John Thompson said was unable to state the exact date of prorogation, but he thought it would be early next week. Many members have gone home and _ prob- ably prorogation will be on Thursday.

The thermometer registered eighty-six in the shade yesterday.

In the division on the Tarte-McGreevy report, Earle and Joncas, two Conserva- tives, were absent unpaired.

New York, Sept. 26. Rev, Dr. Blanchard, of Rum, Romanism and Rebellion fame, died yesterday. Mr. Blaine has written a letter urging the election of McKinley in Ohio.

Wasnineton, Sept. 24 —Secretary Fos- ter has awarded Albert Owens, of Pres- cott, Maine, a siver life-saving medal in recognition of his gallantry in rescuing three men from drowning on 10th July, 1887. The three men rescued—Walter E. Blanchard, Fred Mahan and Frank Mallack —attempted to cross an arm of the sea about twelve miles from Eastport, Maine, in a small boat, which capsized in an ex- tremely dangerous place and threw them all into the water. They were discovered by Owens’ daughter, who immediately told her father, and the latter launched his boat and saved them.

Orrawy, Sept. 24—Hon. Mr. Abboit, replying to-day in the Senate, said that the government would, next session, take up the question of judges’ salaries and deal with it.

Moncton, Sept. 24.—The fire investiga- tion to-night developed a sensation. For a year or two false alarms have been numerous, and when two incendiary fires, set within a few roads of each other, follow- ed the false alarm of the night of the llth

Among the witnesses called to-night was Joseph Bedford, a member of the hook and ladder company, whose evidence was to the effect that a false alarm was rung by George Scott, who is also a fireman and general secretary of the fire department. Suspicion at first pointed to Bedford, who was seen at the box, but it appears from his evidence thet he tried to prevent Scott from pulling the box. Scott, it is ssid, has left towa, and is in Cape Breton. No light is yet thrown on the origia of the actual fire.
