The NFB Film about pornography entitled Not A Love Story, which has been touring the Gaunt—Ty ' recently, has rightly been credited with stirring up a lot of emotions, or, "heated controversy" as the Globe and Mail calls it. But the thing which should be most disturbing about the film is the fact.that it has been censored by every province except Quebec and British Columbia. Because of this, the film may not be advertised and must be shown under. the guise of a »"private screeing","by invitation only" in all of the other provinces. ' THAT is

what is outrageous .

The head of the Ontario Censor Board, Mary Brown, maintains that "We're concerned that the film could be exploited if it were

shown commercially . "

Ironically this is

exactly what the film is trying to point out? the exploitation, or sexploitation, of women 'in pornography. The censored, privatized, backroom approach to dealing with sex, which this film has now been relegated to, is undoubtedly . one of the very factors responsible for the proliferation of pornography.

I told you that I would send the local rag toyou so that you could make canparisons, but everyone and‘their great uncle puts out a paper. So I've decided to send you three of ' . the papers so that you can get an idea of the cross section that exists here. I managed to receive 1 copy of the SUN and it seems as good as always, even though Revel is shooting his mouth off again. But I suppose that is to be expected.

EVerything is fine here, if somewhat boring. The key word to describe Queen's is Pregpy. This is, of course synoncmous with dull. The people who are here thatwere at UPEI are Al Buchanan, Stirling *Keizer, and mi.

The workload is excessive '

but not oppressive, or is it the other way. By the way, I'm typing this because I cannot reimber. if you have ever seen my writing, so I decided to be safe and spare you the expense of a Hierglyphologist (i.e. Paul or Nag).

The big news up here is rain. So far in the months of Sept— ember and October we have had 6.5 days of sunshine.

On Stirlings' floor

on my floor everyone is alive and well, but 1 girl has some kind of illness that has not

be identified. Ah yes, the peace and stability of Graduate School. .It is almost enough to get a man depressed. (Where

is that razor blade anyway?)

But seriously, I am coming to the conclusion that some people are taking life too seriously: Queen's is actually a very nice university but they are right of centre, at least in . their economic depart- ment. Of course I knew that before caning but

how much they actually are. -

The essential differences between Qieen's and UPEI, besides the obvious, are the totally computerized library facilities, Upteen libraries, several computer systems, a hospital, and the fact that it is right in the heart of ‘the city. Kingston is a quaint city but it certainly look more appealing if

‘ examines the treatment of women in pornography

‘ and‘the questions the, resulting attitudes which men appear (to have about women, the issue is being brought to the public awareness. But where the hopes of change lie, there too lies the ignorance of the censorship boards. It is an especially disturbing catch - 22 which doesn't allow the commercial distribution of a film examining the exploitation of women and sex for fear that the film may be, exploited itself; If the censor board believes that it has a duty to protect'the general public from assaults of unnecessary sexual explicitness and violence because of the effects that it may have on an individual, then this film is expressing precisely the concern of the Censor Board itself. /.

In the pursuit of this intent, to make

people aware and present a case for the effects of pornography, the Board has seen fit to censor this ' film over scenes which many women do not even find to be the most disturbing. . In conclusion, I can only emphasize that, although explicit, the film is done in good taste and does not deserve to be censored. At times, however, I can sympathize with the Censorship Board's dilemma. A case in point is some of the material found on the Engineers page. We, at the SUN, do not agree with the censorship of material out of articles but also feel a responsability for maintaining some level of good taste. Let us know how you feel.
