Des spatches from Rio Janeiro via Lisbon show that very sericus opposition to the Republic has been manifested, and that there has been some fighting.
The crowning discovery of the late Stan- ley expedition is the extension of the broad Victoria Nyanza, ‘‘six thousand square miles” in excess of the area assigned it by all previous expeditions. This makes the Victoria Lake, perched as it is more than 1,000 feet above the level of the sea, the most important, if not the largest reservoir on the globe. Since civilization has always developed most rapidiy near large navig able waters, this lake region may at some) not gjstant day become a great commercial ceutre.
It has been remarked that the meeting of Parliament on January 16th will make it ong of the;four earliest sessions since Con- federation, One was the session beginning 6th November, 1867, the first after Confed- eration. The session which opened 23rd October, 1873, and clused 7th November, witnessed the debate on the Pacific Rail- way and the resignation of the Macdonald Government. The session which opened 9h December, 1880, was called for the pur- pose of ratifying the contract with the C. P. R. syndicate. The coming session 18) likely to be a fairly important one.

The population of England and Wales, according to the last report of the register- general shows some remarkable features. rhe population is estimated at 28,600,000. The birth rate forthe year was 30.6 per 1,090 persons living and the death rate 17.8 per 1,000. The bi rth rate is the lowest in th 1e fifty years since tae was estab- lished. The death rate is also the lowest on record, and one a decline of 10 per | cent. on the average of 10 preceding years.

The enormous extent to which the pen- | sion business of the United States has de- veloped is thus referred to by a Washing- ton correspondent: Among the startling statements in regard to pensions submitted by Secretary Noble in his report is one to the effect that over one thousand million dollaus have been paid in pensions since 1861, and that there are now pending four hundred and seventy-nine thousand pen- sion claims. The secretary asks for over hinety-seven millions for vext year, and, in reporting eighty-nive millions as paid this year, he states a million and a half of that sum was received by pension attorneys, New Zealand has had its period of de- pression, but seems now to be recovering from that unsatisfactory condition of affairs, and the pregress made by the colony in the past thirty years is being brought into pro- winenee. Certainly the figures for that length of time tella flattering tale. The population grew from 32.000 to 607,300; the revenue from £146,000 to £3,850,000; the people's savings from £7,800 to £7,860, - 000; the exports from £450, 000 bo £7,860, - 000: the woo! exports from £250,000 to £3,1156,008; sheep from 1,520,000 to 16,- 509,000.
