Sir,—In the discussing of temperance questions there has been a vast amount of rash assertions, of useless invective, of in- temperate writing and speaking on the part of the advocates of total abstinence, while those on the other side have met theirargu- ments with statements so directly contra- dictory that a perplexed student of the

Your rigid teetotal'er may also be a _Pharisee whose hatred of Publicans and ‘other sinners is more than matched by his ‘colossal idea of the moral height to which his—and perhaps his only —virtue raises ,him. Drunkenness is, undoubtedly, an ‘unmitigated evil, and no sensible person would willingly do or say auything that would encourage it. It is a vice which is chiefly the result of foolishnessy poverty, misery and ill-success in life.

It will be remembered that Dr. Bumble found Mrs. Corney’s ‘‘pepperment” very comforting, and that Mrs Gamp took a drop of some- thing ‘‘when so disposed.” But, on the other hand, our temperance men maintain that the example of a moderate drinker is ‘worse than that of a drunkard. This is il- ‘logical, although uttered from almost every ,teetotal platform, and the advocates of total ‘abstinence would do well to abandon a ‘course of argument likely to weaken their ‘cause in January. Anyone = ac- ‘quainted with the amount of fall- ‘ing off, backsliding, amd hypocrisy ' connected with our ourteetotal organizaticns, may be pardoned for supposing that a great oer of those classed as abstainers are moderate drinkers, or, as our teetotallers | call them, drunkards.

On the other side, they who drink in ‘moderation, and do not act the hypocrite, aflirm boldly that ‘to use and not to abuse ithe gifts of God” is their maxim, and that ‘they have reason on their side. Again, ‘Scripture is freely appealed to by both ‘sides, but the Scriptural utterances on the subject are not, and were not meant to be, guides to follow through all ages. We take exception to many of the argrments on both sides, particularly when they appeal coScripture in defence of their views, hurling at the heads of their opponents a few isolated texts, weakened and distorted ‘by separation from their context.

‘The sparkle of the ruddy wine and all occasions of excess” must be avoided by all who would make headway in the fierce struggle of modern life. The efficacy of taking a pledge and joining a total abstin- ence society may be doubted ; for, as Pros- pero says, ‘* The strongest oaths are straw to the blood,” but the moral support which people who are like-minded may give to each other is of great value. Now, sir, drink still works havoc in our midst. Lives are being ruined, and homes that might be a paradise are turned into a hell. Who is going to put itdown? Are the teetotallers of to-day trying their best? I say ‘* No.” Are the moderate drinkers of to-day dving anything? No. Are the house-owners of Charlottetown doing anything to weaken this drink curse? Ob, no; they stand on ‘their housetops and cry, ‘*What is the city

They have mangled the Scott Act, and will mangle any other Act so long as they are at the head of affairs. The friends of the drink traffic are banding together. They will raise fabulous sums of money to advance their interests. So, is it not high time that those who have the wellfare of the community at heart were banded together to oppose those our real enemies? You, Mr. Faitor, have done your duty; you have shown the people of Charlottetown how our City Fathers have treated our honored Mayor. Why cannot the citizens stand up in a body and pass a vote of no confidence on the section of delinquent councillors? Then, I say, and not till then, will we have a respectable town. 8.
