Ellen" James remarked at dinner, he having just returned from there, "how that cemetery has filled through the years. why, I mind when I was a little fellow, well, it seemed as if there were only a few graves there, but now dear me. the num- ber of those I have known. that time has taken its toll!" "There have been five taken from this road alone” we commented over granddaughters head "since Jeanie came to live in the house across the lane. She was speaking of it today. "Our small maid is too young yet to be perplexed over the like of sorrows or death. though given an inkling of any subject she is one to pursue it to a satisfaotory ending. "Yes, Ellen" James sighed "and many a one has been carried there in our time from home or Kirk." He has much to recall of the interval. We realize this when he recounts a tale of the past to Jamie or granddaughter. Then we are aware many of the names that fall from his lips. of boyish com- rades or old friends, live on now only in memory.

Dinner was to be "a shade early today, Ellen, so that we'll get the choring at the barns done, and have nothing on our minds then but the sawing!" because this was the day oi the wood-sawing at Alderlea. The farmers "never saw it this late before" and we laughed to Karo- lyn over the strangeness of bird song mingling with the ring of the saw, in this later than usual endeavour. Straight from a bough of the birch tree on the lawn came the liquid notes of the robin, the-n offering his heart in a melody. it was pleasant to hear. and good too to have James remember his habit 01 years-bringing an armful of the new sticks to the woodbox. in token we think that the smoke from our hearth-fire will be assured in the freshly cut heap. when he came to supper.

"It's beans!" Jamie exclaimed with a chuckle to granddaughter beside him. he having arrived from his classes to join the rest of his family, with an appetite that was obviously demanding. Baked beans and a loaf of "new" bread of Karo. lyn's morning baking. and for a dessert..but that question had al- felldy been brought to the attention of the small fry. in this house- cleaning season.
