Formation of Comets.

MISSILES SHOT OUT FROM THE SUN AT FIVE HUNDRED MILES A SECOND,

Professor Young, of Princeton, N. J.,| then of Dartmouth, N. H., was the first, in | 1872, to obtain evidence of the actual ejec- tion of matter from the sun’s interior with velocities sufticing to carry such matter forever away from hfm; but the evidence was decisive, and since then, says Richard A. Proctor, in the North American Review, kindred observations have been frequently

made. What Young saw, indeed, was apparently the ascent of filaments of hydrogen, at an average rate of

nearly two hundred miles per second ; but it was easy to see that the irregular streaks of hydrogen were not themselves the eject- ed mat‘er. If a thin gas like hydrogen could rush through the region immediately above the sun’s visible surface at the rate of 200 miles an hour—which I reject as in- credible—the shape of such hydrogen mis- siles would be such as to indicate very clearly the resistance they were en- countering. They would be pear-shaped, the rounded part of the pear in front like fire-balls in our air. But these were irregular streaks, like the luminous tracks of meteors, and such doubtless they were. A flight of masses of considerable density must have been shot out on that occasion, and on other occasions when similar phenomena have been ob- served and rushing through the hydrogen in the sun’s neighborhood, caused the gas to glow along their track, just as fire balls in our air leave behind them long luminous trails. The rate at which these missiles advanced could be inferred from the rate at which the luminous trails followed them. Calculation, in which the sun’s retarding action was taken duly into account, showed that the matter thus expelled from the sun left his surface at the rate of not less, probably, than 500 miles per second. The ejected matter left the sun, then never to return, and in the form of precisely such a flight of meteoric missiles as microscopic and chemi- cal researches had shown to be travelling through the intersteller space

The Luscious Peach.

FIVE MILLION BASKETS RIPENING IN THE

GARDENS of DELAWARE.

In an interview with a leading commis- sion merchant of New York who has just returned from a tour through Delaware, during which he conversed with the largest peach growers in that State, a World re- porter gleaned some interesting facts as to the present condition and prospects of the coming fruit crop on the peninsula of Delaware and Maryland. He said :— ‘‘During the last five years the crop has only been a failure once (in 1881), when less than 30,000 baskets were shipped from the peach-growing region over the Taldweee division of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad. In round figures the shipments were: In 1879, 2,300,000 baskets ; in 1880, 1,400,000; in 1881, 30,- 000; in 1882, 2,800,000, and in 1883, 1,800,000. Should July and August, when the fruit is ripening, prove dry the fruit will be of large size. The fruit on the trees is healthy and never looked more promising, and all the indications point to a large crop of govd-sized and highly flavored fruit. The estimate of the number of baskets on the Delaware division is 4,070,591 baskets, and along the waser- courses and other localities about 1,000,- 0OU, making a total of about five million baskets. Of this about 3,000,000 bushels will be shipped to New York and other sarge cities, and the remainder will be con- sumed at home or canned by the local packers of Delaware and Maryland.”’
